Re: i say slay the divorcés
THe Church of England was founded on Divorce.
ok, kill them too.
(heretics)
And that those gay marriages will ruin the sancity of Britany Spears first marriage.
i'm sure we can find something to stone them for, too.

Its not that I don't consider a fake marriage with a girl to be bogus. The gender doesn't make it more or less bogus of a marriage. I was saying that I never considered entering a bogus marriage with a girl and now that we're talking about gays getting married, I started considering a bogus marriage. And I wouldn't consider entering one with a girl although I would consider entering one with a guy.
Its from how I look at marriage that one with a guy wouldn't be legitimate (WRT my religion) in the first place so I would have less of a problem with a bogus one. With a girl, if I entered a bogus marriage, it would have an affect on my later, legitimate marriage.
so just because you're considering fraud means that a whole segment of the population should be prevented from exercising their desires?
some of us are friends with the opposite sex. hey arach. want a navy federal account? we just have to throw down a few bucks on a contract and have it annulled after you set up the account. cheaper than most banks. i wish i could give you health insurance, but i lose that in september. but maybe we could get food stamps.

Their desires for marriage create an obstacle for me, if they just used a different word I'd feel better about it.
the constitution doesn't guarantee you the right to 'feel better' about things.
it does, however guarantee all citizens to the equal protection of the law. and since everyone is so concerned about the protections of marriage, then those protections ARE GUARANTEED to gay people already. moralistic government officials simply have to stop denying them licenses.

But what about the people who don't have a personal problem with it? They'd be bucking the system, I think we should try to prevent that.
You really don't address what I said there. You acknowledged that people (such as you) would be less willing to buck the system if it was called marriage. So it would seem that calling it marriage is a good idea.
Unless you think that that not calling it marriage would reduce the number of people who took advantage of the system, I don't see how the name change prevents anything.
And, as always, segregation bad. But hey.

And by all accounts you really should have died."

Insurance Benefits
Is that what the whole issue is about? Its like the hotel room where you pay $65.00 for one occupant and $75.00 for two occupants??
If thats all that we are worrying about, I wojuld say that Civil Unions are proper no matter whom is involved in the contract, but that perhaps the law should state that there can only be one other person involved in a civil union at any one time.
That way, should you ever later want your fancy Catholic Wedding,
You can still have it---but your buddy won't get cheaper insurance any longer unless you marry him. That privilege is now for your wife.
(assuming Catholics ever allow gay weddings to begin with)
I think I see your point, though:
Civil Unions are business contracts.
Gay Marriage goes deeper. It is a social statement.
Even as a Christian, I see nothing wrong with allowing same sex marriage legislation. If we simply allowed it and quit trying to judge people, the controversy would vanish.
Let God judge the intents and purposes of the heart. Love your neighbor and stay out of their business.

There is more to it than the name though.
substituted with full equivalence
I don't think thats a good idea for reasons I've typed here and there.
then you aren't interested in a full and equal marriage with a different name. guess what. brown v board. we've already been through this. separate is inherently unequal. and you're clearly not interested in equal since you aren't interested in the scenario jar proposed.
what you fail to realize is that gay people already have the right to marry. they are citizens and as citizens are entitloed to the fourteenth amendment protections. this guarantees them the right to equal protection of their marriages under the law. we don't have to redefine anything.
btw. you'd probably have to pay alimony if you divorce your newly healthy biker buddy. i think that should be deterrent enough.

Re: Civil Union vs. Marriage
I don't know what the rules are over there, but in the UK if you get married in an established church (RC, CofE, etc.), then you get the civil union at the same time. If you're not religious, you can just do the legal bit in a registry office or some other place licensed to do it.
yes, it's the same. you go get a marriage license. you fill it out. you get it notarized. you turn it in. you're married. a notary public is all you need to get married. when my boyfriend's dad got married, his friend (a notary) married them. my boyfriend and i were the witnesses. you can get any old person to be your witnesses. you can get drunk people standing next to you to be your witnesses. that's how it works. now, i don't know if a pastor has to be a notary or if there is a special church registry that works a little differently. i've never gotten married. i have no idea.

yes, i suppose, but only to prove a point. some of us have opposite sex friends we wouldn't be opposed to 'marrying' for personal assistance. but it's still fraud. they didn't outlaw opposite sex marriage because it allowed for fraud, so they shouldn't do this for same sex marriage. it's a separate standard and thus unequal.
of course, you can get a navy federal account simply by being my roommate for six months or more.
