The bestiary of "kinds" on the ark doesn't just include dinosaurs, but every one of the now-extinct mammalian orders which left NO descendants. The bible says they were on the ark - what happened to them? What you call species is not necessarily a Kind. Representatives of the Kinds were on the ark, but that could mean dozens or even hundreds of varieties of that same Kind were NOT on the ark. Some that were on the ark possibly didn't survive the drastically changed climate and other conditions after the Flood. I would have thought this very standard explanation would have been better known around here by now.

What's a Kind?
I've never seen an explanation that makes any sense, what's is yours?

Are "kinds" based upon genetic relatedness?
If so, how so? If not, is there a method or system by which we can determine one "kind" from another? For example,is my housecat and a Bengal tiger the same "kind"? Are Chimpanzees and humans the same "kind"?

How 'bout Archaeoglobus and Desulfovibrio? They both reduce sulfate to hydrogen sulfide and make oil wells go "sour." Are they a single Kind?

Why do we even HAVE A flood? Now that question got me wondering what the sources of that story were. What prompted that explanation? When I was a young boy my younger brother was frightened of thunder. I remember my mother telling him it was "tater wagons in the sky tipping over and spilling the taters." Dumping a bag of potatoes in a bin does sound a little like thunder. So I wonder if there was a near flood that frightened people and then some one exaggerated that flooding to tell the story of Gilgamesh etc. Does anyone have any leads to ancient roots of the flood story? lfen

Actually there are several indications of quite a few major floods in the areas between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, the likely origin of the Biblical Flood myth. In one case I remember they found a single layer of mud greater than ten feet thick and extending over a range hundreds of miles on a side. Such a major flooding would have certainly become the source of legend.
Interestingly, at the same time as the Biblical Flood, the only floods being recorded in Egypt were the annual life giving flood. The Pyramids were standing at the time, civilizations thriving and there is no mention of flood as catastrophy except when delayed. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

I've never seen an explanation that makes any sense, what's is yours? i find it interesting that creationists, such as faith, speficially disagree with my attempt at a real and specific definition of a kind, order to keep their ideology vague and unfalsifiable. also, to continue to support their crazy ideas about hyper-evolution.

I'm convinced that the Noah flood was a retelling of the Babylonian myth.
This article gives a good overview:http://www.geocities.com/paulntobin/floodorigins.html I was struck by this paragraph in the conclusion:
Was Noah actually a historical person? Again archaeological evidence supplied the answer. In 1933 clay tablets were discovered in Mari, an ancient city in the Mesopotamian plain. In these tablets (there were about 20,000 discovered), the name Noah appeared many times; as the name of a god.[7] In fact Noah’s name is actually a musculanisation of the goddess of rain, Nuah
I read "musculanisation" as a typo for "masculanization". The tie in with the rainbow sounds like an explanation of why there are rainbows. Maybe someone put the two stories together to expand on that? lfen

I don't think there is much doubt that the origin of teh Biblical Flood Myth lies in the histroy of the two rivers. But I also don't put as much store in Paul Tobin as a rock hard source as I would in some good physical evidence. A lot of his stuff shows all the same characteristics we see from Buz and Faith etal when they are claiming Allah = Moon Goddess.
The key for me is that there were very old civilizations on the plains between the two rivers. There are mountains, and a long history of pretty major floods. Whether the Biblical tale is one of many, an adaptation of some earlier tale or an independant creation may never be known. But there is certainly evidence that flooding was a problem there which would have been seen quite differently than by say, the Egyptians. Aslan is not a Tame Lion
