The messages themselves are not in mySQL yet so I don't know what kind of indexing the current system even uses.

The text search databases are on a per forum basis, and generally grow beyond 20MB, at which point I cut them down to deal with timeout problems, causing old threads to no longer be searched. But my performance testing was done in the test forum, whose search database is tiny. The search databases are opened using sysopen, locked with flock, then tied to a variable using using DB_FILE. But I don't think the search databases are the cause of long unties, or the general slowness. Something changed about six months ago, I don't know what. Sometimes the system is as fast as it ever was, and that can happen any time of the night or day, but more often it's slow. I'm back to working on the dBoard 3.0, which will move the message database, and the search capabilities, into MySql. Don't know when I'll finish, though. --Percy

Hey Percy,
Sorry to be off topic here but... I often search for old posts of mine and I can not find them. I am guessing now, from what you wrote that these threads are probably not being searched. I know I asked for an old thread and Jar found it for me before. Is there some way for admins to search what we cannot?? In other words if I can not find a thread can I simply ask the admins to find it for me? or is this going to create too much of an extra burden??? Either way is fine with me. Sincerely, Brad.

I notice that now when I log out, my name isn't removed from the list of members logged in. At least not on my screen.
I'm logging out now.

It seems that my name was timed out by the time you did the check; my name did remain on the list when I checked immediately after logging out. Or maybe it was just a problem when I was looking at it.
Anyway, it seems fixed now. When I log out, my name is now immediately removed from the "online now" list.

Since I've been able to get onto the site again at least two threads have disappeared ("If you were President..". and "Humour III", both in the Coffee House).
I don't know if their disappearance is related to the fact that they were the threads with the most recent posts - or if that's just the reason I noticed that they were gone.

I have the all topics page set as my homepage and I never visit anywhere else when I'm online. So, I can't really see why I've been getting popups everytime I get on this website. The popups started popping up right after the forum came back on after the long silence.
Anyone else getting popups? I formatted my harddrive last night. The only place online I visited since then is EvC. Still getting popups. Can't blame on the cookies or whatever, since I haven't visited anywhere else. Am I the only one that is having this problem?

Tazmanian Devil writes: I formatted my harddrive last night. Drastic solution. Let me make sure that that's really what you did. You backed up your hard drive, then rebooted from your system CD, reformatted your hard drive, then reinstalled the operating system from the system CD, then restored your data from backup, then reinstalled all the little miscellaneous programs and utilities that most people like, like messenger programs, iTunes, etc. Is that roughly correct?
The only place online I visited since then is EvC. Still getting popups. Even before you logged in? I know the popup people are very clever, so I won't speculate how they're doing this, but the popups aren't coming from EvC Forum. ISP's can sometimes be a source of popups.

(1) Do you have an spyware\adware blocker? If not a good free one is Spyware Blaster
BrightFort You can either stay with the free version and do manual updates (monthly) or pay a donation fee and get automatic updates. This blocks almost all spyware and adware programs that I run into on their way in (there are other programs that sweep them from your hardrive - like adaware - but my sweeps come up empty since using spyware blaster). (2) Have you configured your browser to block popups? Firefox, IExp, and others allow you to configure your browser to block all popups automatically. Usually they display a message bar to say when this happens (sometimes you need those popup windows to login on some sites, and this allows you to tailor the popup blocker to allow them from that site - I had to allow popups to watch the tour de france from their official site). In firefox it is under tools ... options ... content. (3) One more place they can hide is in your registry file, but if you really reformatted this should be taken care of.Enjoy. compare Fiocruz Genome and fight Muscular Dystrophy with Team EvC!
