The central support columns were made of think steel. Now the explanation for them folding was that they did not melt but rather they reached temperatures of uneven heat thus unevenly distributing the load other columns which lead to the initial collapse. That seems plausible.
Now the question that has bugged me is why didn't the subsequent central steel columns on the lower floors, which weren't damaged give way with out seemingly any resistance, or why didn't they seemingly affect the fall of the structure.

Yes but wouldn't the same force have broken the floors off the central support beams so that the force would have been considerably less. Anyway thank you I will go sit down with a physicist friend and get him to explain it.
