Posted to FaceBook today:
quote:
Personally, I have frequently been frustrated by Apple software and its counter-intuitive ways, such as to leave an ever-lasting bad taste in my mouth. And while he had the foresight to steal Xerox PARC's GUI and laser printers, he was also short-sighted enough to not also steal their Ethernet. And yet, he had the foresight to take a partner geek's technological inovations and package it as something that everybody could use. Steve "The Woz" Wozniak responded to his father's "don't you want to own your own home?" with "I want to own a computer instead." It was Steve Jobs' vision and business savvy that made a microcomputer available so that many of us could do both, own a computer and a home at the same time.
Then the fracking stupid FaceBook software posted that, even though it was in the middle of editting.
Two things about Steve Jobs that really are inspiring:
1. He took the ideals of the 60's and he applied them. We wanted to change the world ... AND WE DID!
2. Even in the face of death, he pressed on and continued to work towards his goals until the very end.

Well, well, well.........I would say this thread now has taken a sudden turn in Destiny.
Perhaps we can now round up the usual suspects, throw the Vichy water into the trash and take an understanding dance, disappearin' into the foggy ruins of time, pondering the Biblical-like Trial of Jobs.
By the acronymnal letters of transistence, this *could* turn into a beautiful friendship.

Re: No Macs for me, thank you very much!
Hi Dwise1,
I think you're still misinterpreting what was meant by the post-PC era. It's mostly not about computers in the workplace. The post-PC era will take place in people's personal lives where computers are used for fun and entertainment.
I don't think there's going to be anything like a post-PC era in workplaces in the near term, but even so there has been a significant impact because of the amount of communication and organization that can be done with a smart phone or tablet by people on the go. Staying organized and in close touch with home base or customers while traveling used to require a laptop, but no more.

Re: No Macs for me, thank you very much!
And, no, no one has yet been able to establish that the Apple GUIs are any more "intuitive" than any other non-Apple GUI. If anything, they are less intuitive to the tech-savvy, thus supporting the contention that Apple GUIs are only more "intuitive" to those who do not yet understand anything about computers.
Which is exactly what "intuitive" means, since the "tech-savvy" don't operate computers by intuition but by training.
No one has established it? You've established it, Dwise.
I am gone, history, you sorry assholes
See you soon!

The question isn't why yours is lower than mine, it's why Percy's isn't constantly pinned to "10".

Re: Apple Expanding into the Workplace?
yeah, one is faster than the other. THAT IS WHAT I MEAN.
what do you mean by a Dodge Viper is faster than a Dodge caravan?
I am sorry that you cannot understand.
You can be purposefully obscure, or you can complain when people try to interpret your messages and fail - but you can't do both. Pick one.
not people, just you.
there is nothing obscure about x is faster at job a than y. where x=mac and y=PC, and a = processing multiple raster images at the same time.
you just need me to repeat myself 10 times (only 5 more to go).

Right, but faster at what? Let me try to be more specific - you said that "processing a raster image is faster". Ok, but what process is faster? I asked you if rasterization was the process to which you were referring and you said that it was not. Ok, so what did you mean?
I don't understand the issue you're apparently having. You know what you meant, right? Why not just tell me? Why does it have to be a big fucking secret?

Re: Apple Expanding into the Workplace?
And, here we are at last. The inevitable result when people accuse me of somehow "misrepresenting" them: they refuse to explain what they did mean and drop the subject as fast as they can, because revealing the truth would mean revealing that they meant exactly what I said they meant.
As predictable as clockwork. The accusation is as phony as ever.

Re: Apple Expanding into the Workplace?
A screenful of moving video divided into 500 little windows may not be as challenging as it seems. What if it were 500 different videos? That I would find amazing, but it would have nothing to do with Mac's or PC's. It would require quite an amazing disk drive.
What I'm guessing is going on is that because all the video players are in roughly the same spot of the video that each frame has to be read from the disk media only once for all 500 players. The disk itself will have a cache of recently fetched sectors, and so will the driver.

Re: Apple Expanding into the Workplace?
That's not the point. I can't believe you guys completely missed the point of that video.
The point of that video is to debunk the long time belief (mostly by mac users) that only a mac could display a bunch of windows and videos at the same time. I've talked to mac users all my life. The general belief from that particular population of undesirables is that only a mac is "good enough" to perform such task.
In fact, an ipad user just asked me what multitask is while we were comparing each other's tablets on the train. It was obvious his attitude was his ipad 2 was better than my transformer. When I showed him the programs I was running in the background while playing my game, he just gave me a puzzled look. This guy actually didn't know there was such a thing as multitasking on a mobile device.
That's the point of the video. The point wasn't to show people how much better one is over the other. The point is to debunk a long time misconception about the mac vs pc issue from mac user perspective.
