I prefer God's definition found in Genesis 1:5.

There are two definitions in that verse:
1. The light portion.
2. The sum of the light and dark portions.
So "God's definition" is ambiguous. We have to be careful when the Bible talks about a "day".

And our geese will blot out the sun.

Hi ringo,

Shine a red light on a white coth and your eye/brain will see the same red.

I tried that experiment.

I got a very light pink reflection off the red lense but a long way from red. Like when you put the cloth in boiling hot red dye.

So what gives? I thought the red light shining on the cloth would make it look as red as the red ochres made into dye and applied would.

God Bless,

What gives is that you shone red light on a white cloth and got some red back. Different materials reflect different wavelengths of light. Red ochre reflects a different wavelength of red back to you than a white cloth does.

Re: Creation
Depends on your point of view. It's one of four dimensions of spacetime, similar to but not the same as the three spatial dimensions. In many applications it's defined as what a clock measures, just as we often define gravity as a force exerted between masses.

I bet you're going for "we don't know everything therefore we know nothing". We don't have to understand what time is to know that clocks are measuring something. We don't know what gravity is in the sense you're asking. (We have some hypotheses.) Does gravity exist?

Over There is a place that will be here when you get there.

It is also a song. "Over There" is a 1917 song written by George M. Cohan, that was popular with the United States military and public during both world wars. I thought you might like that little tidbit.

So what did I forget?

Hi ringo,

Cute

The blonde takes a wrench, undoes a couple of bolts

The base plate needs 4 bolts imbedded properly in a concrete base to distribute the weight and action of the flag due to the wind.

That means she would have to loosen 4 nuts to be able to remove and lay the flag pole down.

But my 35 foot tape could be stretched out to measure it vertical in place, giving me the height. Now if you used an 18' pole the tape would be hard to control at full height.

Flagpoles designed to tilt down are not uncommon.

Hi Jon,

Time is very elusive to define but I think my definition is the best so far.

Me Definition:
Time is a concept devised by mankind to measure duration between events in existence. If you got a better one lay it on me.

What a clock measures is duration between events in existence.

A stopwatch is used to measure the duration it takes a man to run 100 meters. Actually they have electronic timers to measure the duration between events in existence.

Jon writes:

just as we often define gravity as a force exerted between masses.

But gravity does not measure the distance between those masses.

Jon writes:

I bet you're going for "we don't know everything therefore we know nothing".

Why in the world would I even entertain such an idea as we know nothing.

We know a lot. But a lot of what we think we know is far from reality.

Jon writes:

Does gravity exist?

I thought the jury was still out on that one.

But I agree there has to be a force that keeps the universe from coming apart. I just believe the Bible gives the answer to that question.

quote:
Colosians 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

The Greek word synistmi translated consist (this is the only time it exists in the Bible) means: "to place together, to set in the same place,to bring or band together"

Isn't that what gravity with the help of dark matter is supposed to do?

Re: Creation
The jury is not out on the existence of gravity. There are no Jesons.

Your definition is appropriate for some circumstances and inappropriate for others, such as relativistic analyses. It is an incomplete definition.

You've admitted that the units with which we measure time are arbitrary and chosen for convenience:

[qs] The Egyptians used the base 12 number rather than our base 10 number as they liked the base 12[/quote]

And the map is not the territory. Time exists and we measure it.

Do you have a point?

And ringo's blond is going to be walking around with a big hex head wrench.

Where I live you could not get a permit to install the first one.

I don't believe I could get a permit to install the second one although it is better design but I would question quality.

The third one would be no problem to get a permit for. It is big enough and strong enough to withstand 160 mile hour winds. There would be a requirement at the location the top was when down to fasten the mask too. The building department or an engineer would give the requirements for the concrete pads size, according to the size of the pole.

But remember ringo's pole was only 14' 8".

Hi Jon,

What are Jesons? I know of a Jesons limited company that manufactures adhesives and emulsions. I used their adhesive.

Jon writes:

Why do you think my definition is wrong for relativistic analysis?

Jon writes:

You've admitted that the units with which we measure time are arbitrary and chosen for convenience:

The base numbers could be anything as long as we have a concept of how to use those numbers.

Jon writes:

Existence is and you measure the duration between events in that existence with what we call time whether it be kept by a watch, clock, or atomic clock.

But you can not measure time.

If you think so explain what it is that you are actually measuring.

God Bless,

yes red ochre reflects light differently than a white cloth, I mentioned that in my last post.
