Define "greater than oneself"
Just because someone is an atheist doesn't mean that they don't beleive in things greater than themselves.
I beleve, or have faith in the followion things, democracy (though I must admit this is a trying time for my faith), Science, the power of rational debate, certian ethical theories, and even the various communities that I am part of.
Do these qualify as things that are greater than myself? They are not greater than mankind perhaps but they are greater than any one human.
Perhaps if you explained what you meant by this phrase we could discuss it better.

Re: Define "greater than oneself"
I meant the term as in spiritualy. To feel a part of something spiritually greater than oneself.
Well, If one doesn't belive in spirits at all then one can't beleve in things that are more spirtiualy powerful.

Any omnipotent being allows evil to exsit
Your god allows evil to exist.
Anyone who beleves that God is omnipotent, and belives that evil exsists, must believe that God allows evil to exsist. Otherwise the god would not be omnipotent.
Personaly, I would much rather believe in a less than omnipotent god who is purely good, than an omnipotent god that chooses not to intervene when horrible things happen.

even evedence isn't enough
I can offer no proof of the devil, nor can I offer proof of God, and I believe that is because if we had any true proof, we would all be pushed to choose God, which isn't the kind of love He's looking for, at least that's what I think.
Heh, I disagree because even when we have a great deal of evedence for something people STILL choose to disbelive it.
An obvious example is evoulution. We have volumes and volumes of evedence to support this theory but people still refuse to accept it. Just look at the numbers in the U.S. of people who beleve that the earth was created several thousand years ago.

Re: Evolutionary advantage
Also i've seen people talk of examples of studies on monkeys (chimps if I remember correctly),
Chimps aren't monkeys, they are apes.
Bees oviously do have some kind of "imagination" if they can communicate using symbols. When a bee dances it communicates information.

Well Topic.
The whole thing could be preprogrammed.
Perhaps we should start another thread about this. Because I think that It doesn't matter whether it is preprogarmmed or not.
