"Mad as a screaming weasel" is pretty accurate. One example of "bias" is that Wikipedia uses CE and BCE instead of AD and BC -- as if that were part of some conspiracy! And their complaint that some articles use British spelling is hilarious. Also, their description of evolution is pretty bad -- this is clearly americanfundamentalistconservativechristepedia.com, not just conservapedia.com.

A big topic these days in academia, even making the front page of The Chronicle of Higher Education, is bias against conservatives in academia. Basically, rigous high quality academic research tends to show conservative positions are wrong. So conservatives either don't do quality research, or they can't do quality research. So they have a harder time getting tenure. Then they cry, "foul!"

There was an article in The Chronicle of Higher Education a while back on Wikipedia. Evidently, someone had experts in various fields compare Wikipedia articles with articles in other more traditional encyclopedias like Britannica. Wikipedia did as well as all the other encyclopedias as far as factual errors go. Also, it seems that experts tend to rate Wikipedia higher than the average layman.

The moon causes tides on the earth, and the earth causes tides on the moon. The tidal bulge on the moon is the reason why the moon keeps the same face toward the earth (just as the tidal bulges on the earth are slowing down the earth's rotation).

Yes, once the earth's rotation slowed enough so that it, too, showed the same face toward the moon, then there would be no more tidal friction, and the system should be stable. But I, too, once read that eventually the situation would reverse, and the moon would begin to approach the earth. I can't remember why (and I was a kid, so the explanation may have been lacking); it may have something to do with the sun exerting an extra perturbation on the system.

Oops, sorry, Quetzal, I forgot to respond to this. Yes, the Chronicle is online, but you need a subscription to read it (which I don't -- the department where I teach gets the paper edition). Sorry. Anyway (and now I am going to be mixing up different sources, I'm afraid), some people feel that Wikipedia is at least as good a source as any encyclopedia, and others are dead against it.

Evidently, the BBC ran a spot on Constupipedia, and a British conservative wrote in to complain about the bias against British standard spelling. Evidently the Americanfascistepedians couldn't resist a dig:
