I for one do not believe the birthers and what we would normally call the "fringe right" are as stupid as many people seem to think. I believe they were fully aware that Sarah Palin was a joke and McCain never had a chance. I don't buy that either. I believe that the right fully expected to win each of the last two presidential elections. In fact the most fun thing about the last election was watching the complete bewilderment and disbelief on the face of Karl Rove when O'bama won in a second land slide. There is no reason that the birther stuff cannot be multi-purpose. It's essentially hatred driven by racism and xenophobic irrationality. Not every use of it is going to be logical. Trump uses it because it gathers him instant news attention every time he trots it out. He takes pride in being the man who got O'bama to release his birth certificate. Otherwise Trump is irrelevant. Je Suis Charlie Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Thoreau: Civil Disobedience (1846) If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning. Frederick Douglass

I have an Aunt and Uncle near me in Florida. They are retired and are pretty far-right Republicans. When the 2012 election was going through its paces, they thought with absolute certainty that Obama would be shown the door. Any poll that said otherwise was ignored. The dis-belief on their faces was epic when the final results came through. Note that they only news source they watch is Fox.

And Hawaii?

Gosh, and here I thought it was a concern for the integrity of the Constitution. And once again you are completely wrong. The birthers had nothing but contempt for the constitution.

Of course. The Constitution requires that a President be born in the USA and they thought there was good reason to believe that Obama was born in Kenya.

No they didn't. There was no evidence that he was born anywhere but HI. But because he had a furrin sounding name and he was black he must be a muslim furriner. Evidence be damned.

Actually the evidence that he was born in Kenya is really pretty good, and evidence that the Hawaiian documents were faked is not bad either.
