I would venture that the worst case would be a Supreme Court Justice. The appointment is for life and is irreversible. The religious nut he chooses will be in for a long time.

Absolute worst case would be Ashcroft as that Justice.

Very true. Unfortunately, I think that Rhenquist isn't even the oldest so it isn't inconceivable that more may step down. Shrub (I love that) may get the chance to appoint two.
