I hear this same kind of thing a lot in academia, where it is assumed that all right thinking people share the same opinion, and that opinion is the far left.

If you aren't aware of how glaring it sounds for political statements--almost universally far left--to be thrown into casual academic discourse, you should be.

Obama is certainly not far left, not even a leftist and certainly to the right of Eisenhower, Theodore Roosevelt, Richard Nixon, Nelson Rockefeller, Barry Goldwater, and many other Republicans. If you like I'd be happy to tell you about the GOP.

For me, one word sums of the importance of Obama's victory: SCOTUS.

Don't limit it to just SCOTUS; they hear only a very few cases a year. There are over 80 vacant Federal Judgeship positions right now.

Summary
Obama won and same sex marriage won and decriminalizing maryjane won and the nation is not going straight to hell and the sky is not falling.
