Re: Reverse Discrimination?
if everyone that met the selection criteria were then put in a random lottery to choose the lucky worker
Sure. That way I could miss out on hiring both the top Howard Law School grad and the top Duke Law School grad that I interviewed.
Maybe we should reserve this procedure for hiring stock clerks.

Re: some privilege
The reason that there is no easy solution to this is because even if an artificial construct was used by the power of the majority race, correcting this will have to involve some sort of power that takes away from that same group. In my mind, two wrongs don't make a right.
What would would be the two wrongs in your mind? How is taking away an artificial construct a wrong?

Good question. Lets invent some hypotheticals and then discuss the specifics.
It's your idea we are trying to illustrate. If you've got some examples of what you mean, then by all means tell us about them.

Re: Fairness vs Privilege
Hurting me is not the way to help others
Every time a black person gets the job, a white person doesn't and vice versa. It is impossible to be fair without hurting someone because there are not infinite numbers of positions. So if a company has historically been lily white, does being fair mean that the only black people who can now be hired have to be better than every other white applicant? Are you better than every other black applicant?
Lots of colleges have preferences for descendants of alumni. Is this fair, particularly when the school has a dearth of Asian alumni? How is it different from affirmative action?
