Ringo was embarrassed out of ignorance of some random tidbit of pop culture. So Ringo threw a hissy fit.
I always have to follow the links backward to figure out what the hell you're dribbling about.
There was no embarrassment. You made a reference that I didn't recognize and I asked you to clarify. You still haven't done so.
You also lied about it, calling it an "offhand remark" when, in fact, it was the entirety of your post Message 343.
Sarah Bellum writes:
I can't imagine what would happen to Ringo's head...
I'm sure you can't.
Sarah Bellum writes:

In fact, I am ignorant about many substantive things. Everybody is.
Y'know what I do when I'm ignorant about something? I ASK!
And intelligent, honest posters ANSWER. They don't call a simple question a "hissy fit".

I believe that in the near future we will have a black swan event.
What does that have to do with what I said?
Phat writes:
For the West, it will be financial.
Isn't a black swan event by definition unpredictable? So how can you predict it?
It's the same as saying, "Some things just can't be explained - so here's the explanation."
Phat writes:
Being a liberal, do you even see it or is it hidden from your perception?
I don't see myself as a liberal.
But liberal or conservative has nothing to do with believing there will be some sort of catastrophic event in the future. Religious nuts are more likely to believe in apocalyptic nonsense but I think it's mostly coincidence that they also believe in conservative nonsense. They're just more susceptible to nonsense in general.

Our day of reckoning is at hand.
I have a history of Nazi Germany that contains a photograph from the 1920s-30s of a group of protesters. One of them is holding up a sign that says (in German), "There will come a day of reckoning."
It did.
There are days of reckoning every day. Germany had several of them. Everybody has them.
The day of reckoning comes, the reckoning happens and then we move on.
I know you're wishing and hoping for the end of the world - but I think humanity is in for some days of reckoning that are much worse than that. And we may survive them.

I had a still in high school....
When I was a lowly chemistry student, the university used to have a Science Fair every second year. One of my buddies was explaining the instrument room, which was labelled "Quincy's Lab", which will give you some idea of the time frame.
My demonstration was three stills: reflux, simple distillation and fractional distillation. Almost every member of the public who came through asked me where they could get the glassware.

... Conservatives dont mind debt if it helps them earn money in the long run.
That's the problem. Debt is sometimes necessary to get the money to do what needs to be done. You don't save up your pennies until you have enough to pay cash for a house. You borrow the money so you can have shelter now.
Conservatives only care about what "helps them earn money in the long run" (except that they often have a very short view of "the long run"). They don't care much about what needs to be done now. They don't want government to do much at all.

I just started re-reading that the other day.

In the story Hank is explaining currency and wages to Arthur with just about the same success as we have had explaining it to Phat.
Back in the 70's, the construction unions in Saskatchewan (my dad was a member) kept demanding wage parity with Alberta because "otherwise, our members will move to Alberta for higher wages." Finally, they got their wage parity - and almost immediately the Alberta unions demanded an increase because "the cost of living is higher in Alberts."
