Maybe the details weren't all made up, but attributed to one person when in reality they may have originated from a number of different people, something similar to what has probably happened in the Arthurian legends.

The style of the NT is different (to me) than the style of the OT.

There is also a very big time difference between the two. I'm no expert either, but I think the OT was written - 'compiled' would be a better term, perhaps - over a number of centuries, whereas the NT was written within a century or so. I'll check the details. It's as if you were comparing a medieval story with a modern novel. Stylistically, there's bound to be a difference.
