That's a cute sound bite. Did he mean 5 years for every cigar? That would make him dead sometime before birth.
Oh you have to use rationalized math otherwise it wouldn't be worth it.

Re: What's wrong with smoking?
Smoking as much as you do is stupid and no amount of philosophy is going to stop a heart attack.' I disagreed about that as well but left feeling thoroughly chastised.
Which part of that did you disagree with?

Just that one's state of mind has a lot to do with whether or not you have a heart attack.

Except that your doctor was not talking about philosophy in general was he? He was talking about your personal philosophy that he should mind his own business about your smoking and lecture the fatties. Well that sounds so much like my Dad, it is uncanny.
Do you think your denial is going to protect your heart and lungs?

Re: Just don't exhale
Yes, there is nicotine in the exhaled vapor, about 1/10 the amount that there is with analog cigs. The ones that got tested didn't have formaldehyde or acetone either

Re: Sounds like this book is a miracle method for quitting
I have no problem with being told that I can not smoke beside you while you are eating your salad but being told that I can not smoke in the park or on the patio or in my office has nothing to do with any danger to the health of others.
But it does pose a danger. And each new study shows the danger to be even greater than previously thought.
If someone chain-smokes on their balcony right below another's apartment, the other party can be exposed to second hand smoke relentlessly and undesirably in their own home.
What gives anyone the right to subject another person to those life-endangering conditions solely in preservation of their own sense of convenience?
Big signs that remind us how many people were killed by cars every time we go for a drive or pictures of clogged arteries on every bag of potato chips. We could have pictures of a cow being slaughtered on the menu beside the cheeseburgers and reminders of how intelligent a pig is beside the breakfast special. How about giant billboards of dead children in front of the munitions factory, oiled birds by every gas station and videos of working conditions in the garment factory when you go to buy your clothes.
I would be okay with that, and am actively in favor of some of those things.
I just think that the dissonance doesn't belong only to the smokers.
There is no dissonance. The evidence has spoken repeatedly that second hand smoke is dangerousa health hazard. The fact has been so well established that it is rather unconscionable for an honest person to not at least admit to the possibility of a similar risk with other second hand exposures and 'play it safe' until a reasonable amount of evidence can be collected to answer the question.
It's the most logically decent thing to do.
Let's be logically decent.

Re: What's wrong with smoking?
Do you think your denial is going to protect your heart and lungs?
Yes, it is my shield against all unpleasant information. Please refrain form disturbing it as it is fragile and prone to withering under the weight of reason. It has to be complete denial or it doesn't work at all. You know that scene from Apocolypse Now where Robert Duval declares the beach safe for surfing? More like that.
Seriously though I do not deny anything that my doctor told me and I am fully aware that it is a foul habit and a tenacious addiction. It is a difficult thing to convince yourself that you do not want to do something that you thought you wanted to do. I managed to smoke 20 cigarettes fewer than usual yesterday as a result of having it brought to the fore of my attention once again.
I maintain that there are not many of us that do not behave in the same manner when it comes to using electricity from coal fired power plants or burning gasoline or buying clothes from sweat shops or buying cheap shit from China that is overly packaged or enjoying the income from selling guns. Where does your dissonance show up?

Vaping
I bought a vaping machine and I have to say that I am impressed. It cost me about $80 which is what I would normally spend every week. So I went from 30 — 40 smokes a day down to 0 with nary a twitch.
I think the real problem will be the govt getting over their addiction to my tax dollars that they wont be getting anymore.

Yes, everybody knows that. My point is that there is plenty of cognitive dissonance displayed by people regarding many other activities such as burning gasoline or dumping raw sewage into our drinking water supply.
So are you going to stop burning gas because it is logically decent.

Yup, they're grrreat. They definitely have nicotine in them!
It cost me about $80
I went cheaper than that; got a $20 battery and a $20 tank.

I thought the best part was stopping coughing.

Some places are already trying to have them treated equivalently as tobacco. Its nothing like tobacco. We should have never called them e-"cigs"...

I bought 2 eGo-t batteries, 2 tanks, and 30ml of juice all wrapped up in a handsome leatherette carrying case. The tanks were only $5 ea and I guess are semi-disposable. Apparently the 30ml of juice with 12% nicotine should last me 2-3 wks at a cost of $16. Wow.
I thought the best part was stopping coughing.
This will save me about $200/mth but yeah money wasn't the motivating factor. I already feel dramatically different after only a few days. Food is a little tastier but my socks are beginning to smell worse. Its nice too that my addiction has suddenly become almost rational.
Its an absolutely brilliant device and a shame that it was shelved in 1967.

I agree. We should be subsidizing the cost of them with tobacco tax revenues. [edit if we wanted to be logically decent]

You can change the coils/wicks in the tanks after they wear out.
I've got a bottom feeder tank, I've found them to be better than the ones with the wicks at the top.

Its 12 mg/ml, which is, like, ppm not percent.
I use 24 mg/ml. If you find yourself constantly using it, then you can up your nicotine level to get your fix sooner and cut down your time sucking on the thing.
I already feel dramatically different after only a few days.
Good for you. I'm surprised that such a heavy smoker had such a quick turn over. Do you drink? You may find yourself wanting to grab a real cig if you're drinking.

Yup. I have absolutely no desire to smoke burnt leaves anymore. Its just disgusting now.

Re: Vaping

Yes.
I recall that it used to say 1.2mg of nic on my cig packs yrs ago. I dont know if that was per smoke or per pack. Do you know how to equate ml of juice to cigarettes?
I do seem to be reaching for it a lot and I will try the heavier mix. I think the guy sold me the 12mg in anticipation of an overdose which is pretty easy to do. I think that I must have an addiction to the nicotine and an addiction to the process.
I'm surprised that such a heavy smoker had such a quick turn over. Do you drink? You may find yourself wanting to grab a real cig if you're drinking.
I have had almost no withdrawal problems at all which makes sense given that I haven't really interrupted my addiction but only changed the delivery method.
I am an accomplished drinker but that doesn't seem to be a problem. I was smoking between 15 and 20 cigs from morning to evening while working and then another 20 when I sit reading or writing. I have found the greatest urge to light a cigarette when I am writing.
I have absolutely no desire to smoke burnt leaves anymore. Its just disgusting now.
I know. How could anybody be so stupid?
I already find myself having to bite my tongue so as to avoid being that obnoxious hypocritical reformed self righteous asshole.

That's per cig. So each ml of your juice is 10 cigs.
But I don't think its really 1:1 like that. Not all of the nicotine in a cigarette gets into the body when you smoke it. And I'd bet its similar for vaping, that you're only getting some percentage of the total nicotine in solution.
I do seem to be reaching for it a lot and I will try the heavier mix. I think the guy sold me the 12mg in anticipation of an overdose which is pretty easy to do.
Meh, not so much. I've had 36 mg/ml juice, it just tasted like shit. Given how much you smoked, I wouldn't be worried about the juice. Just don't drink it.
I think that I must have an addiction to the nicotine and an addiction to the process.
Sure, there's the drug addiction side, and then there's the habitual side. Like, you get in the car, put your seatbelt on, start 'er up, and then light up a cig. Regardless of whether or not you "need" a cig at that point, you're driving so that means you're smoking.
Since switching to vaping, I've rid myself of a lot of the habitual part. I'll start to notice my nicotine level dropping, that feel for the "need", and then dose myself back up to a good level. If I don't need any nicotine at the moment, then I don't find myself vaping.
After a meal though, every time. Mmhmm.
I have had almost no withdrawal problems at all which makes sense given that I haven't really interrupted my addiction but only changed the delivery method.

Yeah, I haven't ever really intended to quit using nicotine. I just didn't like having to breath smoke to get it (chewing was too gross).
I always used to say that someone should invent a small bottle of water with a dose of nicotine that I could take a shot of when I needed some. It'd prolly be too slow of a delivery though, and I'm very happy with vaping.
How could anybody be so stupid?
Nicotine is a helluva drug. Almost as good as caffiene...
I already find myself having to bite my tongue so as to avoid being that obnoxious hypocritical reformed self righteous asshole.
Heh, I'll be that guy. I've already berated some of my friends for having failed to convert to vaping yet. Holier than thou n'everything
