Re: Re:Makers Mark to be watered down?
rueh wisely advises:
I would recommend a Makers Mark double with a Makers Mark back and a Makers Mark chaser with a twist of lime.
The only thing I might add this excellent plan is to order them all "neat". Meaning no ice, no water, no nothin'. In a rocks glass, yes, but no rocks.
Furthermore, since this may be an expensive endeavor, you should note that while your drink awaits the conclusion of your careful tasting of your last sip, cover it with a clean beer circle from the bar. You don't want all that carefully distilled alcohol evaporating into thin air, like so many quarters flapping their wings away from you. Then when you finished savoring your last sip, crack the circle just a tad and snort into your nose the accumulated vapors before taking your next sip.

This.
I never could understand why people will put icecubes in their spirits. It cools them down, which reduces the taste, it waters down your spirit of choice, which reduces taste.
People insisting on really cold beers? Dont get me started..

A back is the same thing as a chaser just different terminology.

It's a backup in case the first drink fails.

When the Sacred Ginmill Closes
rueh writes:
Not if, when. When the first drink fails.
That reminds me of a crime novel every crime novel lover should read, an under-recognized classic by Lawrence Block, "When the Sacred Ginmill Closes."
It is, beyond a doubt, an American soused classic, as boozy and dark as they come.
The title's from David Van Ronk's "Last Call":
quote:
And so we’ve had another night
of poetry and poses,
and each man knows he’ll be alone
when the sacred ginmill closes.
And so we’ll drink the final glass
each to his joy and sorrow
and hope the numbing drink will last
til opening tomorrow.
And when we stumble back again
like paralytic dancers
each knows the question he must ask
and each man knows the answer.
And so we’ll drink the final drink
that cuts the brain in sections
where answers do not signify
and there aren’t any questions.
I broke my heart the other day.
It will mend again tomorrow.
If I’d been drunk when I was born
I’d be ignorant of sorrow.
And so we’ll drink the final toast
that never can be spoken:
Here’s to the heart that is wise enough
to know when it’s better off broken.

"If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you can collect a lot of heads."

At a job interview.
"What would you say was your greatest weakness?"
"Honesty."
"I don't think honesty is a weakness."
"I don't give a fuck what you think."

I got talking to a girl at the bar.
"So," she said. "What do you dislike about yourself?"
I replied, "I often mislead people."
"Really?" she asked.
I said, "No."
