I think one area where morality has improved is the example of international aid.
In ancient times countries seldom struck up a freindly alliance, any alliance was normally more of a suzerain/suzerainty.
But today, although there obviously are countries fighting each other, we shouldn't forget the huge aid efforts of many nations to help the less fortunate.
It's different times of course, and ancient nations were more preoccupied with feeding and sheltering themselves than to spare much of a thought for others.
Nowadays many people donate large amounts of time and money to helping other nations.
Atheists do it out of the kindness of their hearts, while Christian do it for a reward at the end.
Maybe if everyone was an atheist there would be no immorality?
Brian.

Re: The semi-hidden moral reality...
All morality comes form God, but God has left the decision about what is moral somewhat up to us.
Does God have morals?
Brian.

Morality and Yahweh
He is The Moral.
So we should raise our standards to His standard?

Re: Morality and Yahweh
Men are still confused at times about what His standards are.
But, if we take God's actions as reflecting His morality how can we conclude that God is nothing other than a bloodthirsty tyrant?

Re: Morality and Yahweh
You mean from Old Testament stories?
Mostly from the OT.
But we have some examples of Jesus' immorality in the NT, such as His viiolent outburst at the Temple.
There's also the incident where Jesus murdered the son of Annas, and then murdered a little boy who had bumped Jesus' shoulder.
Brian.

Re: Morality and Yahweh
Watched any good National Geographic specials lately?
I hardly watch TV and don't have that channel anyway.
I studied the Infancy Gospel of Thomas about 12 years ago at Stirling Uni.
Anyway, what about Yahweh the bloodthirsty tyrant?
Brian.

Re: Morality and Yahweh
The best thing to do is take the stories one by one as they have been doing on evc...and just realize that they are not the over-all picture.
I would think that the best thing to do is to realise that the Bible is a fairytale book.
Given the evidence, this is the best conclusion.
Brian.

Re: Morality and Yahweh
Depends on what evidence you speak of.
Well, it is difficult to find anything in the Bible that we can confirm. There are some people and events of course, but the supernatural and the proven historical accuracies must undermine the reliability of the collection of texts.
The impact the Bible has had on societies and individuals says that many people, even very intelligent people, continue to find something more than fairy tale about it.
The impact has not always been for the good though, and very intelligent people can manipulate the not so intelligent by using the Bible.
The Bible continues to have influence on the world. Look at Palestine, what right to the land does Israel have apart from the obvious false history in the books of Joshua and Judges?
This is what Israel's claim to the land is based on, stories that have been shown to be untrue, yet the superpowers of UK and USA do all they can to keep Israel there, and even turn a blind eye to the terrorist acts that the Israeli government carries out on innocent Palestinians!
So much for Bush's war on terror.
I know Bush is a Christian, but he isn't one of the intelligent ones!
Brian.

Re: The semi-hidden moral reality...
I believe in an absolute morality, but not because its logically possible or because there are actual examples of it. The only thing I can can back it up with is good ol' Goddidit.
I certianly hope you aren't taking Yahweh as an example of absolute morality!
Brian.

Re: Is scottness Rob now?
Bugger; what a waste of my typing time.
Yes.
Apparently, when you follow an absolute moral being your own morals fall apart.
That darn woman and that darn fruit!

Re: yet another nonsense off topic non-response.
You're a Christian
Hmmm, I wonder about this, I really do not think he is a Christian, or at least he isn't fully convinced that Jesus is his saviour.
That's all they need to know in order to not like you
I don't think anyone dislikes Rob, but the type of 'christianity' he promotes does inform us that he isn't going to be able to make any rational arguments.
Brian.

Re: yet another nonsense off topic non-response.
They are the same person, although Scottness originally denied he was Rob, he was suspended for it.
The reason I do not think he is a Christian is because he clearly isn't convinced that Jesus is his saviour. He lies too easily for someone who is supposed to be born again.
This doesn't mean he isnt a Xian, just that I don't consider him to be one.
Brian.

Re: Spirit of the holidays... forgotton in the decline!
Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.
Who was the virgin that gave birth in the Book of Isaiah?
And His Spirit, will be reborn again and again among many, until the end of the age. (that's last part's not in the Bible, but it would fit)
'Christian' in adding to biblical text shocker!!
And here's to another year A.D. !
B.C. and A.D. are outdated now, the proper terms are BCE and CE.
Regarding morality, do you think it was moral of God to effectively rape Mary?
Brian.
