Let Davis live out his days in a dark museum instead of being glorified in the outdoors for all to see.
Or give him a handful of cigars and use him for advertising.

The title of the thread is a bit ironic, isn't it? Palmyra is being preserved as a museum, isn't it? To remember the past?
Nobody is suggesting that Confederate flags should be destroyed, only that they belong in museums to be remembered.

People who believe that stuff with certain 'messages' should be hidden from public view just because of the message are fascists by definition.
Well, no, that is not the definition of fascism. Suppression of ideas may be a symptom of fascism but it isn't a fundamental principle.
And of course, nobody is suggesting that Confederate flags should be "hidden away" or that the messages they send should be suppressed. What people want is to remove the symbols of slavery from our public buildings. They want our governments to stop expressing pride and admiration for the symbols of slavery.

The people who fight to keep the symbol there do it for one reason, to instill fear in blacks and to remind them that they will never be considered equal.
I don't think that's true. I think it's more abstract than that.
quote:
"There was a land of Cavaliers and Cotton Fields called the Old South... Here in this pretty world Gallantry took its last bow... Here was the last ever to be seen of Knights and their Ladies Fair, of Master and of Slave... Look for it only in books, for it is no more than a dream remembered. A Civilization gone with the wind... "
I think many/most admirers of the Confederate flag are able to double-think that "pretty world" with the reality of slavery (and the post-Civil War repression of black Americans).
Tanypteryx writes:
I'm not a fascist for wanting to see an end to that symbol, I'm just scared.
You can't put an end to a symbol by burning it.

It's about actual monuments made of stone and metal, some of which will be irreparably damaged if taken from where they stand.
We have museums chock-full of statues that have been moved.

Libraries throw books away all the time - they get worn, aren't read often, need the space, etc. Nobody much cares when they do it as part of their usual business goings on.
My local library has used book sales - 50 cents for paperback, $1 for hardcover, $5 for a bagfull.
