You lean towards a short span of time between Gen. 1:1 and 1:2 based upon the context of chapter 1.
Why don't you set the context ?
Ken, you are an amateur Bible student feigning gnosis in an area that no one knows for sure. One thing is clear, based upon irrefutable scientific evidence - the Earth is very very old.
In the literal hebrew of Gen. 1:2, it says "the earth became a waste and a desolation".
The point being is that the Earth went through some type of upheaval caused by its previous initial inhabitants. Scripture and science are congruent when they conclude an old Earth.
There is no basis to minimize the gap between 1:1 and 1:2. You and I both know that you brought a previously decided subjective belief into this debate, and based upon your commentary it is confirmed.
Your young earth creationism feeds a hillbilly stereotype of christianity. You want a young earth because it affirms a dogmatic belief that you and your kind have already spoken up for.
Concerning your last paragraph :
Where is your evidence for Mesopotamia being the place man originated from ? Are you speaking of the Garden of Eden ?
I could point you to a host of books that say Atlantis.
