That was what's known as sarcasm. A statment in the bible claiming that god wrote it proves nothing as to the actual authorship.

gen writes:
The Bible itself states that it is the word of God
The Bible wasn't even an entity when such passages were written.
Second something self-referential referring to itself as true is hardly of value. Other "holy books" make the same statement.
gen writes:
That should settle this debate.
For those lacking discernment and basic reasoning skills, perhaps.
Edited by iceage, : No reason given.

you might also like to read my reply to 'DrJones' - do you believe it when on the front of a book it says 'By so and so'? If so, whats the difference with these statements from the Bible?

'Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophets own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.' -2 Peter 1:20-21
I am curious as to how the author of those words would know that was the case since he can only rely on the prophets telling him that they are speaking for God. Then again prophets are pure and incapable of lying for their own gain right?

Sure, because we know humans write books, we've seen humans write books. we've never seen a "god" let alone one who's taken the time to jot down some notes for us.
Then why dont you believe it in the Bible?
The bible has so many falsehoods in it why should I beleive a claim of authorship? The Holy Qu'ran claims to have been dictacted to the Prophet Muhammad Peace be Upon Him by the angel Gabriel, do you beleive that this claim is as vaild the bible's?

Humans did physically write the Bible, but their words were inspired by God. please point out a falsehood in the Bible for my benefit.

Peter, the disciple of Jesus, wrote these words. He knew Jesus personally when he was here on earth. So he had more to rely on apart from just the prophets words. No, prophets are not perfect, no one is perfect except for Jesus. But their words in the Bible were inspired by God.

Another thing that proves that God wrote the Bible is the timespan it was written over and its various authors. The Bible consists of 66 books, written over a time period of thousands of years, by over 40 different authors that usually didnt know each other. Yet the whole Bible agrees! Their thoughts have got to be coming from a Divine, Eternal, Infinite Source.

What a ridiculous statement. You do realize that when those 66 books were assembled, books that clearly did NOT agree were simply not included? And that the authors of the later books had certainly read the works of many of the earlier books? And that half of the New Testament consists of the letters and writings of Paul, a single man?
This ignores the inconsistencies in the Bible, and the fact that multiple different Canons exist, but your entire statement is just silly, and completely ignores the whole history of the Biblical texts.

The flood DID happen, and that is why we have many of the landforms we have today, without the billions of years theory. This belief is called Catastrophism, as opposed to Uniformatarianism. Catastrophism says that the earthly landscape was changed gradually by erosion, but also by things like floods, earthquakes and volcanoes. This has been observed when Mount st Helens erupted and formed a canyon with extremely similar features to the Grand Canyon, but on a scale of about 1 fortieth. An unknowing geologist would have said that this canyon took billions of years to be formed.
