Ah, those guys, with their subtle ways and mysterious nuances... I know I know. It's a wonder how us girls can ever get to grips with their alien customs and bizarre rituals.
Did you lurk for long before joining in? Yes. Ages. Well over a year, anyway. I am very interested in evolution and natural history in general. But I don't have a particularly strong science background and next to no debating background. The level of debate here is frequently wonderful. Christ - If most here let ignorance or lack of debating skill deter them this place would be a typographical desert. I have found pseudo-intellectualism, a decent vocabulary and an inclination to fervently fly into an argument regardless of any initial knowledge as a more than sufficient basis to participate. But maybe that is just me.....
Would like to contribute more though. You should!! Seriously as long as you can research stuff to layman level that is all that is really required to meaningfully take part in even the most technical threads. The real experts that EvC is blessed with are willing to educate all but the most stubbornly dogmatic (of which there are also plenty). And a lot of threads are not that technical or even debate heavy anyway. And you can always just undertake debate target practice on hardline creos if you want some fun for the hell of it
And anyway I'm more of a listener than a talker (usually). Not in this thread. Loudmouth
I'm always poised to answer questions about British wildlife. I've lurked on the FRDB forum for just as long, only joined up there quite recently and then only to identify a caterpillar for someone. Quality. One never knows when a wildlife expert will come in handy.

It would be interesting to do a survey OK. Let's do it.
First find how people rate sense of humour highly as a relatively important feature in a sexual partner. Yes. Definitely. In fact even a type of sense of humour. If you cannot be outrageously silly with people that you regularly get naked with then who can you be super silly with?
Of those that do, ask why is that important. I honestly think that people who just aren't at all funny would be boring to spend that much time and be intimate with.
It would be interesting to see if there was a sex based difference between "I want someone who can make me laugh" and "I want someone who will laugh at my jokes." type answers. Good point. A bit of both but if I am honest I suspect that I get more of a kick from me instigating and driving the "hilarity". But she has gotta be more than just appreciative. She has gotta be able to join in!! No mere spectators of stupidity allowed. But I cannot deny some male ego in this area.
It would be even more fascinating if we could tell if they were telling the truth or not If we are gonna be publicly psycho-analysed I hope I am not the only one who takes part in your survey

This is the list of Comedy Central top 100 comics: Who voted? Predominantly men? Do you think it makes any difference? Do you think women find female comics funnier than men find them?

I'm in. In terms of doing the survey yourself? In which case please do (so that I am not the only gullible idiot to fall for Mod's attempt to embarass us all)
I'm in. Or do you mean that you are "in" to psycho-analysing me? In which case - YIPES!!

Who voted? Predominantly men? Do you think it makes any difference? Do you think women find female comics funnier than men find them? Fine then, name 10 more female STAND UP comics that didn't make the list... Whooah!! I was genuinely asking!! Not making a question based point. Don't be so sensitive. You big girl you
My problem with the list is they put Roseanne Barr #9 before comics like Hicks, Seinfeld, Kinison, Murphy, Newhart, etc. I'd say if anything they were MORE than generous. Yeah - That is friggin outrageous.
And here's the panel that discussed it (Greg Giraldo, Dom Irerra, Judy Gold, Mario Joyner, Phyllis Diller, Richard Jeni, Pat Cooper, David Brenner, and Richard Lewis) included women, who agreed with the list. Well as a comedically challenged male I can only empathise with my sisters.

Sorry little lady, I didn't mean to come off upset. I forgive you. Can we share lipstick now?
Naw dawg, you one of us, you're funny. Aw shucks......
But you're at your best when you wigga up and deliver those sick lyrics. If Petrophysics keeps up his rabid message rating campaign and Nwr keeps pissing me off with his inanity I may be inspired to pick up that mic again. More to the point aiki has registered her approval and you know us "dawgs" are suckers for impressin the laideees Stay Happy

All performance is a connection with the audience and if the response is that you've laid a turd, then that's what you've done no matter how much you may believe in your work. I don't wanna piss on either yours or Onifre's fire at this point. I just wondered about this statement as applied to art in general. Is there such a thing as being "ahead of ones time" and if so can this apply to performance art such as comedy?

All that has changed, it seems, is societies ability to deal with certain words, and I think that's what we "call" being ahead of ones time. The phrase is most often used in relation to art of the painting, making kind. Is it used differently as applied to the performance arts? Is an audience not an audience not an audiance? I really don't wanna drag this thread down the "what is art" rabbit hole. I just thought it was worth pointing out that popular appeal or even critical appeal at any given point in time is not necessarily indicative of "worth" when it comes to art in all it's various formats in the long run. Or something like that. Edited by Straggler, : No reason given.

Hmmm, I see the thread's moved on a bit Yeah. It has all gotten very serious with Oni and Rrhain going at it with each other. But that is entertaining in it's own way.
I'm doin' it! Well, made a start anyway. May the wildlife be with you.

I see you have entered the fray and received a member rating of 5 for your efforts. Message 45 AND you have incorporated your wildlife expertise into the bargain!! Good going.
Obviously posting your perfectly scored reply to the wrong member was some sort of female self deprecating form of humour Anyway keep up the good work.

Cavey writes: 3) Still can't stop laughing, and I read it five minutes ago Yeah - I had that reaction to that one as well. I read it earlier this afternoon. Still chortling quietly to myself now.

Oni writes: Rrhain writes: But what makes it OK, what makes it an act of comedy and not cruelty is that we know that he's never gonna do it. And we know that Homeless Charlie is never going to rape, Rice. So that makes it an act of comedy. This to me is the clinching point. I have been reading this discussion with much interest. You, Mod and Rrhain are three of my favourite posters. So y'all goin at it hammer and tong I find kinda fun. And you and Rrhain have obviously got some past chemistry going on which adds extra spice to the whole affair. My opinion (for what it is worth) is that whilst the woman in the vid has every right to complain if she feels offended her basic premise that she is somehow speaking for "the nation" or "the people" is ridiculous. As for Patrice - Well to be honest I wasn't impressed with him either. Rather than make the argument clinching point that you now have (i.e that it is a joke exactly because we all know it isn't going to actually happen) he instead just sorta bullies her into submission by relentlessly and remorselessly making the same point in different ways. Namely that it isn't up to her to decide what is funny and that it is patently stupid for her to claim to represent the view of "the nation". I think we all agree with this. But IMHO he was kinda a dick about it and he never made the most salient point that you now have. Edited by Straggler, : Misattributed quotes

And I'm curious if you or Straggler have a different opinion after he physically performs the joke. I never really had a problem with the whole "donkey punch" thing. In the right context I reckon it could be hilarious. As it happens I loosely know a gay guy who comes out with shit like that all the time and who has made a variant of that joke in a situation where it got a very mixed reaction. At the time I was of the "Ahhhhhhhh dude that is too harsssshhhhhh. You cannot say that" camp whilst at the same time laughing my arse off at what he had said (his joke actually involved plunging a screwdriver into the temple of what he called his "man shaped receptacle" at the appropriate point). Sick - Yeah. But this guy has a way with words that makes being lobotomised sound like fun.
Forward the video to 3:18min and he gets into all of the sex move names The spider-man and the poltergeist are my favourites. The poltergeist still has me chuckling slightly even as I write now.
FoxNews pinned two people with opposing personalities because they knew what it would develop into. Yep. And they both played their parts almost to the point that we could have scripted their responses for them so predictable were they. Patrice coulda and shoulda done better.
