Re: Defending the format
indeed, and the lack of interest a thread creates will determine it's suitability for debate.
I've seen some interesting looking topics rejected before, I've seen possible new contributors shot down in some very condecending manners before.
Put the topic out there, if it's crap it won't last long, if it goes OT that will be taken care of in the usual way, if it becomes abusive, it wil be shut down.
Believe it or not, back in the day when the PNT etc format was being discussed on the board, a fair amount of us used that same argument. The majority, however, came down on the side of the current format. Several people left in a huff (for that and other reasons), a few of whom have since returned. I'm personally still undecided (after all this time) as to whether I prefer the PNT or the more "open" format of a board like IIDB. Not being one of those who've had problems with it, I guess the PNT thingy hasn't really affected me much. OTOH, I agree that some PNTs that might have been interesting haven't been promoted. However, overall I've noticed that the mods are pretty reasonable about reversing their decisions if you whine about it enough on the Consideration of topic promotions from the Proposed New Topics thread.

Re: The Two Cultures
No, the conflict is broader than between religion and science, and that conflict has peculiarities I'm not talking about here. I really am after something in this arena even if I haven't yet found the right terms for it. But I'll read Snow and see what he has to say. There are definitely two cultures, two mentalities, at odds with each other in such a way that communication is nearly impossible.
Strange as it may seem, I agree with you - at least the way you've framed it here. Some of your other statements much less so. The question that arises in my mind is: how do we overcome the communications gap at least long enough to find a modus vivendi that will enable us to solve common problems? Problems, btw, that I am convinced have the potential to cause an extinction vortex for the species as a whole. Or, do we just let things ride as they are, fight each other as each perceives the need, and let humanity slide into an abyss of its own making?

Re: The Two Cultures
I know you're busy with a lot of other threads, but I think this topic deserves one. I am willing to open a new thread to explore possible problem definitions, and possible solutions where the two "sides" can see if they can come to a common understanding. Since I am literally diametrically opposite your viewpoint, if the two of us can reach an understanding at some level, then maybe there is a chance that others may be able to as well. I'm suggesting an open thread, rather than a debate. If you're too tied up, that's understandable.
I suspect that the science side is going to have to eat some crow and get down off their high horse if a solution is to be possible.
On the other hand, this is probably a bad start to the process...

Re: The Two Cultures
Since you've thought about the subject, yes, open a thread, I'd like to see what you have to say.
I haven't forgotten. I'm still mulling over how to frame it.

Re: Meanwhile, back at the topic...
A general and inherent inability to remain on topic?
Sorry.
