This thread was an emotional reaction to the snobbery. People making comments that suggest that I don't know what an "electron" is: I probably think it's like a little pebble or something, being the fool that I am. I don't "understand logic" because of course only a scientific-minded person can understand such things. I've obviously never heard of that analogy of comparing the universe to the surface of a globe. And on and on. And then there's these snide references to their degrees from "world-class" universities (woo!).
I suppose a "nation-class" university wouldn't do?
That's part of it. The other part is when I make a dent in THEIR argument, they never answer it. They just ignore it.
They don't just do this to me of course, but I was reacting personally.

You ever considered a holiday? From here I mean? (although the real thing is nice )
Maybe some time off - come back with the batteries recharged?

Vacation from what?
Thats the thing, Charles! We are all addicts! We hang out here and wear our emotions on our sleve and then get surprised that people call us snobs! Its because we all are actually getting closer...brothers and sisters fight now and then!

Your kidding me! Someone would actually point to the university they went to, to bolster their argument (or damage yours)?
I would have taken it as a sign of desperation myself - lowly polytechnic educant that I am

I must ask how do you think we feel when we say god doesn’t exist only to be told “it doesn’t matter {what you think} he loves you anyway, Just open your heart to him” Do you not think that reads as arrogance and elitism? Do you not think that it seems to us that your side is not listening to our arguments? Not answering our questions. Failing to be polite or reasonable? Sure it can.
There are some on this forum who seem as impenetrable to knowledge as Lead is to many things, but you wont catch me inferring that their density matches that of said metal. ( ok at least not twice.. )
Does it annoy and frustrate when the other side seems not to be listening. Sure. But that said for the nature of the subject matter under discussion the behaviour of the forum is quite exemplary.
As CK said if you are feeling the strain then maybe a self imposed time out would do you good?

Being ignored
That's part of it. The other part is when I make a dent in THEIR argument, they never answer it. They just ignore it.
If you think it is important or a particularly good point --- KEEP REMINDING! Many things get 'ignored' just because there is too much to keep up with. Really ignoring a point is an admission of inability to answer it. Force that out. That isn't the forum it is individuals and up to you to work on.

You make too many assumptions. It's not my "side."

I think maybe this IS a reflection of the cultural divide after all, the science mind treating the humanist mind as if it were retarded. They do misinterpret their opponents in the most bizarre and insulting ways, and do take these self-congratulatory postures that look pretty silly really. Nobody with a humanities education counts as having an education at all it seems.
Funny that you get lumped with us creationists and evangelicals because of your wrangles with the scienceniks. That's insult to injury for you I would imagine.
I've been exploring the CP Snow concept of the two cultures and getting the impression that he's on the science side but I think at least he's right about there being two cultures even if I'm against his ultimate position on it. I don't know how I missed this controversy as it's right in the arena of my own concerns for years. But I'll catch up.

As rr says, you're making assumptions. From my reading of his posts, it's pretty clear that he's an atheist. He just approaches a lot of subjects from an acute angle .

Re: Assumptions
As rr says, you're making assumptions
People have a tendency to assume too much. Why? Because there are thinking in terms of simplified categories, that's why. Snobbery at work.
Also, with some people on this board, there is no CONTINUING. I must have told Crashfrog half a dozen times I'm a nihilist, but he still assumes I'm a believer.
I'm going to make a signature that explains my basic position. Maybe that will help.

As far as I can tell no one has been declared a victor in a debate here. I have also never seen a person concede defeat in a debate. Those silences along the way (assuming they are not oversights and misunderstandings - but have been expressly pressed at by you and dodged by them) can be taken to be what they seem to signify - the biggest concession towards your position that you can expect.
You and they truly know the cause of the silence. The point will have struck home, acknowledged or otherwise. That can be enough.

I wouldn't put it that way. The issue of whether or not there is a God is a large and serious question, although it's treated with amused contempt here frequently.

You shouldn't allow yourself to be bullied. As iano says in another post, if someone tells you they've got a degree from a world-class university, you're probably winning the argument.
But equally, if you stray into someone's field of expertise, take the correction gracefully. It will help you to firm up your arguments in future.

The issue of whether or not there is a God is a large and serious question
It's is the biggest question of all, the answer to which has more ramifications for every man, woman and child who ever lived. Which is perhaps why it is the topic which is discussed the most here.
Teens laugh and giggle when their science teacher gets to the part in the book where human reproduction is covered (Page 56/57 when we all giggled). Contempt is but an 'adult' way of hiding ones innermosts
Edited by iano, : I'm not saying so there...
