Oh dear
Greetings all,
Welcome to EvC Desdamona
Its sad to see the debate getting a little heated
Especially when Lam and Desdamona were starting to get on so well.
I was intrigued by Lam's comment that he treats everyone the same, and by Desdamona's approval of that vs her complaint about sexism in her community (I wonder if Desdamona will think about what that implies.)
But I wonder if this strict equality is so good in this case?
Perhaps Desdamona would be better treated here if we noted her background (no offence Desdamona, I applaud your attempts to expand your horizons, and hope to help your visit here be fruitful.)
It seems we are talking with a young lady from high school, perhaps 14 years old, from a tiny town of < 10,000 people (< 4000 families) in a conservative southern state, with a family backgound that is obviously religious and conservative.
Of course her arguments may be weak, of course she may get things wrong, of course she still believes in the Bible.
But she CHOSE to come here to debate and discuss big concepts,
she STATED she wanted to learn,
she ADMITTED there was much she did not know.
These are good signs for a maturing young person, so I hope all here strive to help this young lady grow and learn, and overlook her immaturities
On the otherhand,
dear Desdamona -
If you do want to have a pleasant discussion here, you will have to keep an open attitude - there are members here who are very intelligent and highly knowledgeable indeed, but they will not tolerate silliness. Imagine telling your English teacher that you knew Othello was really written by Marlowe because a Bible code told you so - he'd laugh. Such are some of the things you say here.
Of course its good to be sceptical, but you show a habit of being blindly sceptical with scientific reality which is thoroughly tested, and yet gullible about old-wives-tales and Bible stories and creationist web sites.
Honestly Desdamona, when you start showing as much scepticism towards the things grandma tells you the Bible teaches, as towards tried and tested science, then you will be taken more seriously here.
You complimented Lam on not being sexist while noting sexism in your own community - yet this sexism can be found rooted right there in the Bible which informs your society (e.g. much of the OT and comments by Paul) - has this made you think Desdamona? Do you think the way of the Bible is always right?
