Have you actually resorted to the rubber and glue argument? Apologies. I work with a Mexican guy who's also homophobic. We're really good friends, though. He often jokes to me that I'm gay, thinking that would hit a nerve. I'm pretty masculine in real life, so he keeps joking about it trying to offend me. In turn, I keep mentioning immigration office trying to offend him. I guess after a while it's become a normal exchange between us, kind of like saying "how ya doing". One would also have to consider my past. I'm an ex cop, and my friend looks very much like the stereotypical Mexican gansta. He even carries a pocket knife around. So, we often joke about me being the good guy and him being the Mexican gansta.
Anyway, you just remind me of him that's all. I think I drew the connection where he's both hispanic and a comedian... or he tries to be. Edited by Taz, : No reason given.

And I repeat. So far not a single state has voted by majority to allow gay marriage. Maryland. So there.

Dr.Adequate writes: Maryland I don't think Maryland meets Taz requirement, which as I understand it means confirmation of gay marriage allowing laws by popular vote. There have been several states where the legislature has enacted laws like the one in Maryland. I'm not aware of any cases where such laws have passed a public referendum.Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. I'm not aware of any cases where such laws have passed a public referendum. So why have legislatures if the only laws that matter are referendums. Taz's whole argument is ridiculous. Are we to have a plebiscite on everything? How about we just have a dictatorship of the majority? Just throw the Federal and State Constitutions out the window. This whole idea of needing a majority of people vote for something i order for it to be legit is asinine.Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts

On the other hand, if gay marriage legislation is often followed by referendums to overturn the new laws, then Taz's point isn't really moot is it? ABE:As for state constitutions, here in NC, voters have amended the state constitution so that gay marriage legislation can never be enacted, and are considering extending the prohibition to civil unions. ABE: off I agree that parts of Taz's arguments are ridiculous. But in any event, I think a rebuttal should be on target, and I don't think Dr. A's response was on target. Is this for real? Do you not see the significance of gay marriage failing every time it was put up for a popular vote?
Replace gay marriage with interracial marriage, women's right to vote, or any number of other human right issue and the press, the politicians, you liberal commies, and just about every other public figure would be mortified if popular vote turns it down. That's the significance.

Interracial marriage and women's suffrage never won a popular vote, and might not now.

I don't think so. Interracial marriage and women's suffrage if put up for a popular vote now will win overwhelmingly, IMHO.

Taz writes: Interracial marriage and women's suffrage if put up for a popular vote now will win overwhelmingly, IMHO. Maybe...the latter certainly if women were allowed to vote for it--which they wouldn't have been prior to suffrage. Black Americans did not have effective suffrage in 1967 when the SCOTUS changed the interracial marriage landscape, so that probably wouldn't have passed either. Do you think putting them to a popular vote would be a good idea? You know, so they'd be real rights."If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you can collect a lot of heads."

I've never said it was a good idea to put them up for popular vote. In fact, I've expressed many times on this forum that I don't trust the unwashed masses at all. Don't believe in democracy.

Don't believe in democracy. Commie. Then why is a popular vote for gay rights important?"If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you can collect a lot of heads."
