When you cough you send out a pray of droplets at high velocity. These droplets fall away rapidly but can extend quite far. An asymptomatic carrier, not knowing they are infected, without a mask can put out quite a spray. With a mask, however, if not fully contained, the spray would be considerably less. How considerably I have no idea but I can imagine the velocity of the droplets through/around the mask to be a small fraction of the initial speed and would fall away within inches, not feet. The contagion is limited to the surfaces of the immediate surrounding area like hands, door handles, shopping carts, etc.
The uninfected person does not need a mask to keep out the virus since the virus, so we understand, does not aerosolize over distance, thus the 6 ft rule. The rest of the protocol involves touched surfaces. That is where washing hands, hand sanitizers and keeping your fingers out of your nose comes in. That leaves the case of the asymptomatic carrier not wearing a mask as a growing vector of infection as the virus spreads to a larger share of the population. In Arizona, the incidence of disease is still small, but growing. As more become asymptomatic carriers I can see the utility of everyone wearing masks since this 6 foot rule is rather fuzzy and not really achievable for every interaction in a growing base of asymptomatic carriers. New York and the like should be doing this now. As in right now! The problem I see is that there are not enough effectively functional masks. A home industry is born. Local seamstresses making masks for friends, family and profit. I can also see where even cloth masks, less than HEPA/FDA effective, could be better than nothing given the circumstances. They can still be effective in keeping spewed droplets out of your mouth/nose unless you get in the direct line of fire of a full blown salvo from some ignorant negligent asshole. Which brings me to the reason I’ve written this much so far. Other than just self-quarantine boredom. Cloth masks are not one-use items. Even the standard surgical masks we bottom-feeders of society can no longer get are put into multi-use mode these days. So how do we clean them? My idea is to dampen the mask, not drench it but just dab it, with a clean sheet of paper towel wet with ethanol then seal it in one of those zip-like baggies and let it fumigate for a day or two. Would this work? I know ethanol in the guise of rubbing alcohol is as scarce as surgical masks and Lysol-like sprays in your local grocery/pharmacy store but for those who don’t know Everclear 190 proof grain alcohol (95% ethanol) is still available, at least in Arizona, in your local liquor store for about $25 a fifth (750 ml). Some new info on the subject.

Coragyps is right on. Pipe cleaners are a good way to go. I have a political problem with doing *any* business with Hobby Lobby but, hey, if that is the only readily available source then no choice, right?
Watching and hearing what police officers go thru on a daily basis (Phoenix PD just lost a commander in a domestic disturbance call) I cringe at the increased risks you folk are subject to these days. Not just the virus but the stir-crazy nut-jobs this is bringing out. Watch yourself. Take extra precautions. And keep your fingers out of your nose.Eschew obfuscation. Habituate elucidation.

We are close to 1m cases of Covid-19 in the USA. That is one case in every 330 people.
Do you know 330 people well enough to be privy to their state of health? The usual circle of friends close enough to you that you would know when they have a cold or when they are feeling low on a regular basis is less than 20. And it gets smaller the older you get. At that rate you’d have to question some 16+ people to find one who is personally close to a Covid-19 case and the concentration of hot spots in the landscape means you would have to go multiple times that number to find the one. You’re a conspiracy nut case, Al. We know this from your past participation. I can see, having been privy to the shenanigans of today’s conspiracy rabble on the net, that you are apparently maneuvering to say since so few people here, or anywhere, know personally of a Covid-19 case, that this big problem is really no problem at all. That the whole pandemic thing is overblown if not an outright hoax perpetrated by the globalist elite or the reptilians or the Girl Scouts or something and that 50,000 dead is either no big deal or is a lie. Such is the nature of society today. Is this were you are going? Do you have some other reasoning for your questions that you care to share?Factio Republicana delenda est.

Vaccines don't weaken our immune systems, they strengthen it. They cause the immune system to develop antibodies for the pathogen in a less hostile manner then a full infection by the bacteria or virus would produce.
Misuse of antibiotics doesn't weaken our immune systems but strengthens the evolutionary development of the bacteria's antibiotic resistance which leads to our immune systems having to adapt to yet another strain of the bacteria in a full out infection which is often too strong to avoid the most severe symptoms. Antibiotics have to do with bacteria only and have no effect on a virus like SARS-CoV-2 at all. Neither of these explains the India situation vis-a-vis the rest of the world. the vaccines strengthen our immune systems for a certain set of viruses. However, might not that weaken our resistance to other viruses such as Covid19? No. The immune system doesn't care how many bugs it has to defend against. You have millions of bugs in your body all day every day and immunity ready to go for many millions more. When a new bug comes along, if there is no vaccine to give the body a taste and gain an immunity the comfortable easy way, then you will gain immunity the old fashioned hard way, if you survive. It takes time for the immune system to gear up to fight a new bug. Some of our most dangerous bugs can do a lot a damage, and kill, before the immune system catches up. That's why vaccines are so effective. The body already knows this bug and doesn't need to go through its analysis and initial antibody production which can take days to accomplish. From exposure through a vaccine the antibody plans are already on the shelf ready to go within a few hours. Edited by AZPaul3, : No reason given. Edited by AZPaul3, : No reason given. Major problem developing. Appears these number have turned a peak and are now on a decline. We are losing out.
It is time to reopen the country, reopen the economy full-bore. We can get those numbers going up again with some good old American effort. Problem is we can’t rely on the blue states to do their part so the majority of the effort to reverse this trend falls to the red states. Come on, red states! Let’s get going before we fall further behind! Go Big Red!Factio Republicana delenda est. |

Didn't want this question getting lost in the flow.
Can someone please explain how to use the EvC datadropsite to show a graph or image? I don't recall there being such a thing. Need to host your graphics off-site.Factio Republicana delenda est.

I can imaging hosting all this site's graphics would involve lots and lots of, not just bytes, but gulps. Gigagulps, hard swallows, open extra wide and inhale the whole pizza the way we used to do when we were young kinda gigagulps. Percy would have to move this place to the multi-tera-peta-zettagulp farms of NASA.
NASA probably wouldn't allow that cuz they got all those moon martian space alien images to scrub the aliens out of and render in the other half of the Earth to make it look like a globe. That takes a lot of memory power. Edited by AZPaul3, : No reason given.Factio Republicana delenda est.
