This is a known bug, it's on the todo list.

I don't know how I missed it all this time, but apparently when I first released dBoard 3.0 I screwed up the message ID order. Message ID's are supposed to increase with time. In other words, the newer the message the larger should be its ID. Apparently when I moved the messages into the MySQL database I screwed that up. The problem didn't become visible until a couple months ago when I changed the database queries to be more efficient by relying on the fact that message ID's should increase with time, but I only just now noticed it. In thread lists the order of recent threads is fine, of course, but with threads older than a year or two the order goes all bonky.
I'm going to fix the problem by remapping the message ID's. This will take an hour or two and require that the board be shut down, so I'll do it late some night soon. I'll post an announcement at least a few hours before.

Hi Mr Jack,
I understand how you feel. I find I don't mind a new announcement that blinks, but I do mind old announcements that blink, which happens if they're edited or updated. Browsers disabled the blink feature long ago because of how annoying they are, so I implemented a custom blink because I felt the need for some at least some announcements to call attention to themselves. It's not really a true blink. What really happens is that the opacity is toggled between 1 and .5. What I was seeking in the message you're responding to was some feedback as to what solution people preferred. Some possibilities:
I'm sure there are other ideas. We are currently working toward an alternative to the announcement approach for the Index to certain important topics announcement, which is currently permanent. Edited by Admin, : Add another option to this list. Edited by Admin, : Add more options.

Thanks, I've added it to the list - I like this idea independent of the blink.

Mr Jack writes: Do you not think that should have told you something? It told me that the blink feature as originally implemented was flawed, but this decision was made at a time prior to webpages having any significant dynamic content. My implementation uses an opacity of .5, so it's a more subtle blink, and in the context of today's Internet with pop-ups and animated ads and auto-scrolling and so forth, mere blinking seems like an option that should be available to discussion board administrators. The question I'm trying to answer is how best to provide this capability, and your feedback is helpful. As I understand you, you'd like announcements to disappear after they're read, and you don't want blinking under any circumstances.

The weekend release introduced one new feature that some of you may already have noticed: Dynamic Menus. If you hover over the Essential Links item in the top menu you'll see that the links appear in a drop down menu. If you slide down to the Posts of the Month item you'll see that the menus can cascade as a list of links to past Posts of the Month threads appears.
Feedback, issues, problems, comments welcome.

Sorry, my fault. I had set the status level for that menu item to Director so that only Moose could see it and provide feedback, but he's been busy so I've set the status level to normal and everyone should see it on all pages now.

Hi Adminnemooseus!
Do not despair, and thank you for trying out the new menu definition feature. I'll take a look, we can trade notes later, I need feedback on it about what is good about it and what's not.

Thank you for bringing the problem to our attention, the problem has been fixed. Internet Explorer sometimes has different interpretations of how things should work, and so the code has to be adjusted for this, uh, differently abled browser.

Email was brought down by an attack earlier this week but should be working now. Did you get a notification for this message?

Email was knocked out for about a half day early this week but has been working since. Did the problems you describe happen today?
By the way, go ahead and use that account for now, I'll merge it with your old account when I get a chance. Edited by Admin, : Add note.

I'm at a loss - I just tested the "Request new password" process and the email arrived within 15 seconds.
I'll merge your new account with your old now. Everyone else - please let me know if you encounter any email problems. We did experience a significant email DOS attack early this week, and the next day a server DOS attack. I thought I had dealt successfully with the attacks, but maybe not, so please let me know if you experience any problems by posting to this thread. Thanks.

I'm unable to duplicate the failure in IE 8.06. Do you still get the same failures after clicking on "Reload"?
IE is still the most popular browser out there, and solving problems like this is very important, so if "reload" doesn't fix the problem then if you have time and could provide additional information it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'll try to keep this short. Sitting behind the HTML that describes webpage content is Javascript that controls the dynamic part of that content. Javascript can even define new content.
The HTML <button> tag does not work properly in Internet Explorer, but it is relatively easy to workaround with Javascript by trapping <button> clicks to execute Javascript code that carries out the correct action that IE will not. But IE8 is the odd man out among the IE browser versions. IE7 and before needed this little Javascript intervention in order for <button>'s to work, and IE9 and after need it, but IE8 does not need it. But this Javascript code runs for all version of IE, including IE8 which doesn't need it, but the code doesn't interfere with IE8. But your IE8 version, though nearly identical to mine, isn't completely identical, so maybe there are different flavors of IE8 that behave differently with respect to <button>'s. I have a test you can carry out to check this possibility:
Let me know if it worked or not and you saw the preview of your (empty) reply. If it worked then I know how to fix it. If it didn't work then I'll figure out something else to try next. Thanks for your help! Remember to go back and reenable active scripting.
