Re: At
Thanks for finding these. I should be able to fix them in a day or two. Making sure I've got this right, the problems are:
Can't use double quotes in a message title.
Registration dates are being displayed as the current day in a list of members produced by a search.

Message dates and times are also wrong
Registration dates are being displayed as the current day...
I just noticed that all the message posting dates and times are also being set to the current date and time, except the time is am instead of pm.
Posting this message 8/11/09 at about 9:38 pm eastern time.

Re: Message dates and times are also wrong
Oh, okay, I see the problem now. I evidently inserted a bug in the code that displays times using the server's time zone, looks like it's always using the current time for all times.
I should be able to fix this tonight, but if you go to your profile page, scroll down to Time Zone, then select "Display times in the time zone of your local computer", you'll get the correct times. Assuming your browser has Javascript enabled.

Unicode Character Problem Again Fixed
I've changed to a more complete Unicode character set, and I believe this should solve the problem of displaying funny characters. Please point me to new messages that have this problem.
Many of the old messages with funny characters should now display correctly, but not all of them.

I looked at
Message 3 in Chrome, IE (versions 6 and 8), FF and Safari and was unable to reproduce the problem. Can you tell me your browser and version?

I don't have FF on this machine. Could you repeat the experiment? Cut-n-paste the delusion definition from the American Heritage site into a message, post it and see what happens?

Re: another translation problem
Hi Percy,
What puzzles me is that I have a "punch list" of things I can copy and paste, and it is a txt file - it should only be in ascii text when pasted (unless this machine using (shudder) vista (shudder) is causing the problem). Here is the paste again to see if it does it here:
delusion -noun (American Heritage Dictionary 2009)
... a. The act or process of deluding.
... b. The state of being deluded.
A false belief or opinion: labored under the delusion that success was at hand .
Psychiatry A false belief strongly held in spite of invalidating evidence, especially as a symptom of mental illness: delusions of persecution .
and a couple more to see if it happens there too:
faith —noun (American Heritage Dictionary 2009) 1. Confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing. 2. Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence. See Synonyms at belief, trust. 3. Loyalty to a person or thing; allegiance: keeping faith with one's supporters. 4. often Faith Christianity The theological virtue defined as secure belief in God and a trusting acceptance of God's will. 5. The body of dogma of a religion: the Muslim faith. 6. A set of principles or beliefs.
belief —noun (American Heritage Dictionary 2009) 1. The mental act, condition, or habit of placing trust or confidence in another: My belief in you is as strong as ever. 2. Mental acceptance of and conviction in the truth, actuality, or validity of something. : His explanation of what happened defies belief. 3. Something believed or accepted as true. , especially a particular tenet or a body of tenets accepted by a group of persons.
Confirmation Bias (Wikipedia, 2009) In psychology and cognitive science, confirmation bias is a tendency to search for or interpret new information in a way that confirms one's preconceptions and avoids information and interpretations which contradict prior beliefs. It is a type of cognitive bias and represents an error of inductive inference, or as a form of selection bias toward confirmation of the hypothesis under study or disconfirmation of an alternative hypothesis.
Confirmation bias is of interest in the teaching of critical thinking, as the skill is misused if rigorous critical scrutiny is applied only to evidence challenging a preconceived idea but not to evidence supporting it.[1]
Cognitive dissonance — (Wikipedia, 2009) Cognitive dissonance is an uncomfortable feeling caused by holding two contradictory ideas simultaneously. The "ideas" or "cognitions" in question may include attitudes and beliefs, and also the awareness of one's behavior. The theory of cognitive dissonance proposes that people have a motivational drive to reduce dissonance by changing their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors, or by justifying or rationalizing their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors.[1] Cognitive dissonance theory is one of the most influential and extensively studied theories in social psychology.
A powerful cause of dissonance is when an idea conflicts with a fundamental element of the self-concept, such as "I am a good person" or "I made the right decision." This can lead to rationalization when a person is presented with evidence of a bad choice. It can also lead to confirmation bias, the denial of disconfirming evidence, and other ego defense mechanisms.
worldview —n (American Heritage Dictionary, 2009) In both senses also called Weltanschauung. 1. The overall perspective from which one sees and interprets the world. 2. A collection of beliefs about life and the universe held by an individual or a group.
The glitch did not appear when I first posted it, but it was there when I came back to see a response.
Enjoy.

I don't know if you thought you had this fixed, but the problem persists.
Subtitles with "double quote" marks post correctly, but if you do a message edit the subtitle is truncated at and including the first ". Such can be immediately fixed, or can be fixed via another edit.
