Re: There isn't any proof Jesus ever existed
I don't have anything to say about two of the cites you give -- I tried a quick Google search, but couldn't find any academic sites that talk about them. But the quote by Josephus' allegedly affirming the deity of Christ is believed to be an interpolation added by later Christian copyists. There is an Arab version of Josephus' work, and this is much more modest in its claims. In this version, Josephus is merely reporting what is said by others.

Whoa!
The first mention of the shroud is from the 16th century, and the shroud itself was carbon dated to the 14th.
I, too, think that the hypothesis that there was a man and teacher (with some controversey as to what he did, in fact, teach) is the best explanation for the data -- 4+ gospels, and the existence of a cult based on him by the latter half of the first century -- but I still have a healthy dose of doubt about it.

Pretty much that is what you do to all "Christian fundies" isn't it?
Persecute them?
Let's see. They are allowed to go into their churches and worship in peace without harrassment. Several prominent ones have their own television/radio shows broadcast to the nation. Many prominent elected and appointed officials are fundamentalist Christian (think Ashcroft, for example). What is your definition of persecution? That you don't have the sole authority to decide which laws are passed?

Thats like saying all Spanish people are the same.
How is that the same? Spanish and Hispanic people are born Hispanic. But isn't Christianity a lifestyle choice?

Re: a little bit of interesting news Lam
My point was actually a bit of irony. Conservative Christians (and many non-religious conservatives) object to comparing discrimination against homosexuals to racial discrimination on the grounds that one has no choice as to one's race, but homosexuality is a choice.
It seems strange, therefore, that someone would compare certain statements against Christians with analogous statements against racial minorities, seeing how one has at least as much choice about one's religion and its activities as one does about one's sexual preference and acting on those preferences.

What seems even sillier to me is to base your life on a set of ideas that will never, ever change despite any and all evidence and common sense.

Aye, there's the rub -- to prove that the ideas are true. So far, the "evidence" in favor of Biblical literalism has been less than compelling.
There is nothing wrong with love. But you don't need Christianity to appreciate love.
