Your first was 6 days ahead of my first. I haven't now checked, but that might make you #2 active senior citizen (Percy's #1).
Added by edit: Oops, never mind. You were a bit less than a month behind me (Nov 26 vs Dec 20). Moose Edited by Minnemooseus, : See above. Also changed ID.

This 9/27/02 message is actually at the bottom of my personal message index.
As mentioned there, Minnemooseus did have admin status for a while prior to the Adminnemooseus ID creation. At the top of the cited is what appears to be a admin mode Minnemooseus message dated 2/13/02. Somewhere I probably have some record of when Minnemooseus became an admin, but the mentioned date is only 3 months after the Minnemooseus registration date. I remember how it happened. I e-mailed Percy offering to help fix coding errors. Much to my surprise, I almost immediately became a full admin. I don't think the "Director" status existed back then. The current difference between an administrator and a director is that an administrator can cause a lot of damage (delete all the messages etc); A director can do all that plus badly muck up the formatting of what is left. Of course, a director also has enhanced creation powers, such a creating new forums. But I blather, or something like that. Adminnemooseus

My first post was a new topic, back when I thought I had to bring topics to the table, for some reason.
EvC Forum: 6 questions about an "omni" God I got here because someone older than me was here and I followed her.

Great idea, Straggler.
What was your first ever EVC post? Message 1 Wow, the mid is less than 10,000... and now we're up to over 500,000.
Do you read it now and cringe with embarrassment? Do you read it now and feel the glow of self congratulatory consistency? Do you read it now and wonder when that once polite, reasonable and respectful person that you used to be became such a pompous self righteous arse? Its a little embarassing seeing how much I've learned since then contrasted with how much I thought I knew back then. and I think I've become less religious...

Truthlover's first message was to start the home school evolution questions topic. I recommend reading the entire topic. I second that recommendation. Truthlover is awesome!

Looking back, I found this topic starter. I like my next post better!
Phat writes: I would say that I am a little less zealous than I was back then.
We all debate and discuss issues on this board, and could be prejudged into two camps(or more)...the "irrational" believers of fixed ideas vs the "rational" open to change scientists and logic thinkers. As for me, I am a definite Theist. Some of my beliefs appear irrational, as they can not be "proven." Some of my ideas are also fixed. I see the world this way:5% of the people own or conrol 90% of the wealth. Dubya may or may not be a moral man. He sees the world as a world where the U.S. is a benevolant empire. As such, this empire must be allowed access to the resources which guarantee a cash/asset flow for our capitalist interests. The argument would be that without access and control of this power, our national economic power base will diminish. I disagree. I think that many of the domestic wealthy would suffer, but that the nation as an entity would survive. Now...although I profess not to be a strict fundamentalist, it is interesting to analyze the supposed end-time scenario proposed by the fun-die Christians. An "Antichrist": comes along and declares that old, fixed religious ideas are passe, and that the world needs to wake up and realize that god is us...that our inner potential as humans is the only ideal worthy of respect. (He desecrates the Temple and proclaims himself to be God.) Now...from a pure logic perspective, the Antichrist makes sense! In fact, this is the supreme irony of History. The Absolutist fixed thinking has always stifled human progress and has been rescued by the science humanists, first with the Renaissance, and later with the Enlightenment. For myself, I chart a course that incorporates the best of either extreme. I am a Believer in a source of wisdom beyond myself or my fellow humans, yet I am grounded enough to lighten up a little and let nature take its course. After all, if God did create us, He knew how we would be anyway! Lets allow the humanists to be involved in the process and defeat the evil emperor with us, fellow fixed thinkers!. |

Anyone who claims to be at 1 or 7 has to be deluded because either position requires a certainty about the source of their absolute certanty that it is impossible to have. The key difference is that those of faith are necessarily 1s whilst those that call themselves atheists would more likely describe themselves as 6.999999999Rs as they would generally accept that absolute certainty about anything requires the sort of faith that they oppose!! WOW no difference! here is the idiot (me), wandering into a battlefield of long arms that keeps arising itself time after time. i'll sit this one out.... lowercase and all. - xongsmith

Percy writes: There were earlier messages during the testing phase, but they were deleted. I suppose they have not somehow fossilized, have they? Pity, that. Here's my first ever message on EvC, dated 16-Jul-2003 11:32 AM. I think I was heavily influenced by Douglas Adams at the time. Older members may recall that my first avatar was Brains from Thunderbirds. Later I switched to a few incarnations of Seven of Nine, the last of which was a stunning picture of Jeri Ryan. Hilariously, it provoked one member, who apparently thought it was my own portrait, to come on to me. (If you're still lurking here, you know who you are.) For illustrative purposes, and also because I like to look at Jeri Ryan again, I have reinstated it. Male members click on the picture at their own peril, for if they do Jeri will haunt their dreams for ever after.

Heh heh, as coincidence goes I was just reviewing my first few posts last week. 'Cause I'm a bit conceited like that
I started here: Message 89 I know I lurked for at least two years before posting. I remember I was terrified of stepping on toes, getting banned, or providing information that anyone would find interesting in the smallest amount. Who knew that anonymous internet posting could be so intimidating? I was so timid, in fact, that I couldn't even have my first post be a part of "the arguement" and was more of a tap-on-the-shoulder, what-about-this? kind of suggestion. The worry that came with the posting was so much that I lurked for another 3 months before my second post... I've since learned the following: -you don't get banned around here unless you're an idiot who has no manners. If you just treat people with respect, you'll do just fine.-EVERYONE'S subjective opinion is interesting to someone... besides, if we didn't post our subjective opinions, there wouldn't be much to discuss at all. -synesthesia is still one of the coolest medical conditions I've ever heard about, and I still wish I had it Edited by Stile, : You are free to move along. These are not the edits you're looking for. *waves hand

I know I lurked for at least two years before posting. Two years! Wow!
The worry that came with the posting was so much that I lurked for another 3 months before my second post... And look at you now!! Let this be a call to arms for all those long term lurkers who have never bitten the bullet.
synesthesia is still one of the coolest medical conditions I've ever heard about, and I still wish I had it I had to look this up. How truly fascinating. I was at college with a guy (pure maths student) who said he saw equations in colours and that he could manipulate them on the basis of eliminating "green" or whatever. I never had the foggiest what he was talking about but he was bloody clever. Synesthesia - Wikipedia Edited by Straggler, : No reason given.

Great idea, Straggler. Glad you like it. Actually it was the two of us dragging up old posts in recent discussions that first got me thinking about this. How views might change or soften as a result of participating at places like EvC. And how we look back on our previous selves. I also thought it would be interesting to see how the longterm EvC stalwarts in particular started off.
Its a little embarassing seeing how much I've learned since then contrasted with how much I thought I knew back then. Your first post is pretty forthright and provoked a lot of reaction. You obviously started as you meant to go on Edited by Straggler, : Spelling

I was busy googling for information on a "hot topic" I was researching for enjoyment at the time, and stumbled upon these excellent pages. The topics and various forum sections seemed to go on forever and ever. At the time I could do little more than bookmark the site due to the sheer volume of material.
So I posted a quick question on an existing thread hoping to steer the discourse onto the related question I was interested in. Still no answer; but alas my question has become moot. First post:Message 168You mention that space is expanding. The universe is expanding. Do you mean to say that the universe is expanding away from the ball?
Love Taz's reply:What ball? Been lurking ever since. It continues to be a journey into the nature & facts of science versus a phenomena of self-delusion associated with a particular aspect of Man's psyche. Edited by CosmicChimp, : spelling

My first post isn't anything spectacular, something about measuring the speed of the propogation of gravity. However looking at my earlier posts I cringe at how poor my ability to explain things used to be. I really have to credit this site and some of its members with improving my ability to communicate physics to others. I've notice the improvement it has made to lectures and talks I've had to give. So if I ever manage to write my dream book of quantum mechanics for interested non-physicists there will be a few acknowledgements. Well I doubt I am alone in thinking it is us who should be thanking you. Yours are some of the best explanations of stuff I have always wanted to understand that I have ever had. If there is ever a greatest post hall of fame type thing here there are several of yours on quantum field theory and related matters that would get my vote.
