That guy is pretty credible. I've passed on the video to some email contacts and said I think they should pass it on to their lists.

Maybe anone who watches the first video, from Feb 5, will also watch the second, but I want to post it just in case. This is very recent and he's talking about practical things we can do in this one.

Advice for dealing with the virus, and a possible antiviral aid?
Happy St. Patrick's Day by the way. Might as well start out with that. I gained a respect for the man some years ago when I read a biographical novel about him and wrote a post about it at my blog.
But my subject at the moment is something else. I've been collecting information about this pandemic, specifically advice about what can all do to protect ourselves and others, which of course includes all the standard advice about washing and avoiding contact with people and so on. The expert in the videos above says we don't even have to sneeze to spread the virus, all we have to do is breathe, and that it remains in the air the way the motes we see in the sunlight coming through a window remain in the air. And it has many times the impact of the flu as well as twice the contagion. Something that we really should be treating with great care of all kinds.
VITAMINS FOR THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
One bit of advice I found was to take the vitamins that strengthen the immune system, such as megadoses of vitamin C. Vitamin A was also mentioned but as I understand it smokers and former smokers should not take that because it is known to cause lung cancer. Natural beta carotene from carrots is OK though, and carrot juice is a way to get a concentrated form of it. Another on the list is zinc, and that's all I've collected so far. I think D3 should probably also be added but I haven't read up on that for this purpose.
COCONUT OIL AS AN ANTIVIRAL AGENT
Another thing I considered was coconut oil, which is a favorite of alternative health zealots to replace other kinds of fats in our diet. I've been keeping it myself for many purposes including putting it on my face and hands as a moisturizer. I get seborrhea, otherwise known as dandruff, on my face, which I used to scrub off with something called a BuffPuff until I discovered that coconut oil removes it.
I vaguely remembered that coconut oil is known for its antibacterial properties and wondered if it would have any effectiveness against a virus, as soap does. And lo and behold it is reported to have antiviral as well as antibacterial and antifungal properties. Happy was I to discover this as that means it can help keep hands and face clean of the virus. How well it works I don't know and I also don't know how far to believe what these health sites say about it, but I do accept that it must have some benefits in that direction.
So reading through one of the sites I see it mentioned that it can help with cold sores too. EVEN IF TAKEN INTERNALLY. Hm. Really? Cuz when I was reading up on how soap kills the virus I wished we could eat soap and kill it internally as well as on the skin.
If eating coconut oil really can kill the herpes virus that causes cold sores am I being nutty to think it might help with this new virus if we eat it? Too much to hope, but worth some thought?
Soap kills the virus by breaking its lipid/fatty shield or something like that. I'm not going to look it up again right now but I think that's what I read. Not all viruses have this fatty element but this covid19 does, and soap can break it, effectively killing the virus.
SO IF COCONUT OIL CAN CURE COLD SORES IN THE SAME WAY, BY BREAKING THE FATTY SHIELD OF THE VIRUS, AND SINCE COCONUT OIL IS EDIBLE, COULDN'T EATING IT HELP WITH THIS CORONAVIRUS? COULD SUCH A HOMELY INGREDIENT ACTUALLY BE HELPFUL? I'm almost afraid to think it could but it seems to make sense.
So, CALLING ALL EVC SCIENTIST TYPES. COULD THERE BE SOMETHING TO THIS?

Re: A Question About Masks
Sounds like it would work if you wore it all the time and took the precautions of not touching it as they suggest, but always wear one, replace them etc. But whenever you take it off you'll be exposed to whatever is in the air wherever you are, and still of course exposed to whatever is on the surfaces around you. If you also clean everything avidly maybe you'll conquer the problem. But if you take the mask off around anyone else and breathe their air without knowing if they are infected or not, and they may not know themselves, and that includes family members, what good has the mask done you?

Re: Advice for dealing with the virus, and a possible antiviral aid?
Since any of us can be deficient in Vitamin C I'm for taking it. The quote shows that the immune system benefits from it and the stronger the immune system the better for facing a pandemic. How much is needed probably varies and I don't know how you tell, but it can't hurt to overdose on Vitamin C.
Although one can overdose on Vitamin A, it would be hard to overdose on carrot juice.
As for Zinc.... don't know.
But I'm still interested in my question about coconut oil. Any thoughts on what I wrote?

Random guy on the internet?
Are you calling the man in the videos a "random guy on the internet?" No, he's an expert of the very sort you are talking about. Go listen to him.

Re: Advice for dealing with the virus, and a possible antiviral aid?
Yes I've overdosed to the point of diarrhea, so I know to stop short of that dosage. But as for a healthy diet, gorillas in the wild probably get enough C from their diet, but a lot of us can't be sure of that.

Re: Advice for dealing with the virus, and a possible antiviral aid?
The thing is, the fat in soap is a large part of what destroys the virus, with its fatty parts. I tried to find a nice succinct discussion of this but ran into pay walls and ad-cluttered sources, plus this one that is so irritatingly wordy I almost gave up on it and maybe I should have but I finally found a fairly quotable section:
Soap dissolves a virus’ structure
Soapy water is totally different [than alcohol-based disinfectants]. Soap contains fat-like substances known as amphiphiles, some structurally similar to the lipids in the virus membrane. The soap molecules compete with the lipids in the virus membrane. That is more or less how soap also removes normal dirt of the skin (see graphic at the top of this article).
The soap molecules also compete with a lot other non-covalent bonds that help the proteins, RNA and the lipids to stick together. The soap is effectively dissolving the glue that holds the virus together. Add to that all the water.
The soap also outcompetes the interactions between the virus and the skin surface. Soon the virus gets detached and falls apart like a house of cards due to the combined action of the soap and water. Boom, the virus is gone!
I had read something earlier that was a lot simpler about how it's the fat in soap that attacks the fatty covering of the virus and breaks it apart.
Anyway I put this information together with the claim that coconut oil has antiviral properties and was thrilled at the idea that there's something that may act like soap against the virus but is edible. I don't know if it's just that it's a fat, in which case why wouldn't olive oil or butter do as well, or there's something else about coconut fat that makes it antiviral.
I'm still intrigued by the possibility and will probably try to find out more.

Re: Advice for dealing with the virus, and a possible antiviral aid?
I am likely to listen to some of the health "nuts" and may overdose to some extent, though it does have a bad effect on my digestive system above a thousand or two mg so I don't follow them above that. It's true that I might get too much that way but as Phat points out the RDA is too low, WAY too low according to many, and I'm willing to overdose a bit to get through this pandemic.
Carrot juice and zinc and D3 are also on my list, and i'll keep looking for other recommendations. I'm in the age group that is particularly susceptible to this virus and I'd rather go in the Rapture if you don't mind.

Re: A Question About Masks
Yes I knew you were talking to me. The thing is, as AZP points out, Osterholm IS an expert, what he says in those videos is very credible and helpful. But of course go with print if that works better for you.

Coconut oil as an antiviral
But of course its merely being a fat wouldn't make it antiviral or any fat would do, so I looked for the reason they claim antiviral properties for it and found this article about coconut oil as an immunity booster:
Coconut is actually comprised of 50 percent lauric acid, which the body converts to monolaurin, an antiviral agent that fights off a variety of pathogens and viruses. Many of the viruses and pathogens coconut oil has been found to prevent include the following: herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, HIV, listeria monocytogenes, helicobacter pylori, and harmful protozoa such as giardia lamblia. ... coconut oil is truly a wonderful tool to keep in your immunity kit of wellness as a more natural solution. Though it hasn’t been found to be a proven cure for any disease, the antiviral properties in coconut oil have been through extensive research.
Worth keeping around as it says but not very encouraging as a strong preventative, especially since you wouldn't want to eat much of it anyway.
It may be more useful as a topical aid for seborrhea and candida rash. Oh and some antiviral usefulness on the skin too.

A Small Book about Boosting Immunity
Interesting. I got the Kindle booklet by Michael Savage titled "Dieases Without Borders" because it's about boosting immunity against viruses among other diseases. It was written during the Obama administration and I'm reading the first chapter which blasts Obama for his "open borders" policy which is bringing back old diseases we'd eradicated, and bringing in new diseases, all because of an influx of people who are not being subjected to any kind of testing or restrictions.
So here we're in the Trump administration and the same Leftist mentality that was hard at work undermining the nation under Obama is resisting Trump's attempts to close the border and protect Americans. Such wonderful insanity we are enduring from the Left, and we only get objections to it from the Right. Amazing. And you all don't think the Left is out to destroy the nation?
So I'm going to read this book to find out if he has any advice that might improve our resistance to this pandemic.

Re: A Small Book about Boosting Immunity
Well, that was not something to recommend him, I'll agree with you about that. I'd hever heard him say that myself. I sometimes find him hard to listen to, he can be all over the map with his opinions, on the one hand he can say something brilliant, on the other so off the wall I have to turn off the radio. He gets on rants against other talk show hosts which I can't stand. But when I think I'm going to have to completely write him off he comes along and says something important. I certainly agree with him about what Obama did. He's a crackpot and he's a genius, and quite a character. He drives me crazy but I can never completely give up on him.
This is a small book, only cost $3 and he did study nutrition and epidemiology so I'm hoping it has some good suggestions.
