You can't have common sense gun control legislation in a nation that has no common sense about guns.
I'm all for common sense gun control legislation.

I think they should be ignored more than they are. As I've said before, "dog bites man" isn't news. You might as well report, "Sun rises in east," every day.
My question is whether shootings become so common that the media largely ignores them. Phat writes:
If people die in an earthquake, I'm not sure that's newsworthy either. What makes earthquakes, etc. worth reporting is that we may be able to do something to help the survivors.
a hundred people can die in another country and most of us won't hear about it.

We need to arm the cashiers at Safeway so they can protect the customers. What if the administrator does not want to have "ability to engage in shootout to protect lives" in their job description? What about country music concerts in Vegas? Do you want to arm the whole crowd so they can blaze away at the hotel where the shots are coming from? ... schools, where the shootings always happen. I don't care who is armed....An honest discussion is more of a peer review than a pep rally. My toughest critics here are the people who agree with me. -- ringo

That's what I'm saying. If more good guys with guns is your solution, arm all the good guys in the crowd with sniper rifles. "He's in that window! No! He's in that window! No! I mean the one beside the one I shot out!" Possibly if there had been someone in the crowd or nearby who had a rifle handy he might have been stopped before he did his worst. The problem is: How do you figure out who the good guys are? By giving guns to good guys, you're also giving guns to bad guys who haven't done anything bad yet. And you're also giving guns to guys who couldn't hit the side of a barn - but they could hit the side of a hotel.

It has nothing to do with "this day and age". In this same day and age, most of the countries in the world get by with very few mass shootings. But making sure crowds anywhere are unarmed in this day and age is NOT the sane solution. It's about the insane attitude that Americans have toward guns.An honest discussion is more of a peer review than a pep rally. My toughest critics here are the people who agree with me. -- ringo

I recently re-read two books by Edwin Tunis that I was fond of when I was a kid: Colonial living and Frontier Living. They portray a gun-obsessed and violence obsessed America going back to the 1600s.
It certainly IS about "this day and age." We have a NEW unusual problem in this country.... Faith writes:
They don't have the same problems because they don't have the same attitude - that guns problems can be solved by more guns.
Other countries don't have our particular problems and the comparison is unfair. Faith writes:
We have to discuss it soon after the shooting because it's only a few days until the next shooting. And again, stop arguing this when there's been a shooting....An honest discussion is more of a peer review than a pep rally. My toughest critics here are the people who agree with me. -- ringo

And a lot more confrontations that didn't even involve armed students. Imagine a frustrated teacher drawing his Colt 1911 and yelling, "I said, SIT DOWN!" Having a "them vs us" mentality would encourage more shootings, in my opinion. Kindergarten teaches us how to get along with our fellow citizens. High school is supposed to teach us how to think and discuss things rationally. Trump wants to emphasize the worst aspect of human nature and teach children to solve their problems by shooting it out. We might just as well close the schools entirely. An honest discussion is more of a peer review than a pep rally. My toughest critics here are the people who agree with me. -- ringo

But as long as the 2nd Amendment is interpreted as applying to everybody, it makes sense to let everybody have military-type weapons - i.e. assault rifles. "Well regulated Militias" have almost ceased to exist, those that do do not at all resemble the militias imagined by the 2nd amendment, and men no longer provide their own guns when joining the military. An honest discussion is more of a peer review than a pep rally. I would agree that very little about the 2nd Amendment makes sense outside the US. I'm just saying that it seems to be consistent - if "militia" means everybody then everybody is entitled to military weapons. I wonder if they draw the line at howitzers? I guess 'makes sense' means something different in the US. Something like 'makes no sense'.An honest discussion is more of a peer review than a pep rally. But the 2nd Amendment is interpreted as if everybody is entitled to bear arms, isn't it? However, a well-regulated militia certainly does not mean to be including every militia. Reminds me of a newspaper article some years back: A school in Los Angeles, I think, was considering building a wall around its playground to keep stray bullets out. Just goes to show there's a solution to every problem. This reminds me of an incident from maybe 15 years ago where a hunter fired at a deer and missed, striking and killing a housewife hanging wash out on the line. And our geese will blot out the sun.

I don't exactly see eye-to-eye with jar on gun ownership, and that's fine. Diversity of opinion is healthier than everybody marching in lockstep. ... many individuals who are legally allowed to carry guns are not as responsible as you and if this should be an area of social concern. I also don't see eye-to-eye with many people on dog ownership. I agree with my father who said that dogs don't belong in the city. Irresponsible dog ownership causes a lot of harm. A certain amount of dog control is appropriate but there's room for debate on how much. Maybe every police officer doesn't need a police dog. Maybe some people are responsible enough to have a dog just for fun.And our geese will blot out the sun.
