Even though we raise our voices in support of the Chinese protestors there is little our government can do to affect that support. This is an internal Chinese affair and we, as a civilized member of the international community, must respect the international law and custom that keeps us from intervening in their affairs just as it keeps them from intervening in our domestic affairs.
An official expression of concern, a statement in support of human rights (something we used to be known for), would be appropriate. More appropriate would be an effort to curb the human rights abuses we are perpetrating along our own southern border. It won’t help the Chinese achieve their freedom but it would lend credence and legitimacy to our words of loving freedom and respect for human rights. This would enhance our standing in the international community. Unfortunately, that is something our government doesn’t seem to be interested in any longer.Eschew obfuscation. Habituate elucidation.

It certainly doesn't help, either, that Trump's purges of competent people in favor of hacks, apparatchiks, sycophants, and delusional imbeciles doesn't leave him with many people who know even the first thing about diplomacy.
It says something about the qualities of our current president that the best argument anyone has made in his defense is that he didn't know what he was talking about. -- Paul Krugman

Apparently he's under a lot of pressure from inside, even Bolton, to say something strong. He's resisting because he wants a trade agreement more than human rights.

I figured trade agreements would come into this.
Both, because that's his main focus, and also because having already gone the route of tariffs and barriers he's already shot the main arrow in the quiver leaving very little else for leverage. It says something about the qualities of our current president that the best argument anyone has made in his defense is that he didn't know what he was talking about. -- Paul Krugman

Plus it really doesn't look like the State is doing anything illegal and so I'm not sure what there is that could be protested. If a group of protestors took over a US airport I imagine that the police would use whatever force was required to move them out of the airport and secure the safety of the airport for travelers.
AbE: We might claim excessive force was used but after May 4, 1970 I'm not sure we would have much moral ground to stand on. Edited by jar, : hit post not preview

He may think the trade deal is more important, and doesn't understand the importance of the Hong Kong situation. I wouldn't want to trivialize the trade deal, it's the way he works, and some of that has to do with buttering up tyrants, and he probably thinks it could soften the guy up toward Hong Kong. But I'm for doing whatever WE can to put pressure on him and on Congress at least to make a strong statement. Again, I don't want the protestors to think they are alone in their concerns.
There are no human rights abuses at our border according to many who have visited there to find out. Edited by Faith, : No reason given. Edited by Faith, : No reason given. Edited by Faith, : No reason given. Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

It might be good for them and us if they put their minds to such a good cause and got distracted for a while from destroying the country.

You haven't noticed that to Trump money and personal power is all that matters?
There are horrible human rights abuses at the border according to everyone who's visited to find out, except for some border patrol agents and a very few Republican congresspeeps. Don't have the ability to wade through that much sheer propaganda, but what I picked up on a skim-through makes it clear that is what it is, the usual propaganda that you all believe and I don't. Funny how anecdote and personal testimony are rejected when they favor a position you oppose but bits and pieces from children, picked out by the media enemies of Trump, will always be welcome on your side of the fence.
"Kids in cages" existed under Obama. And of course the fact that a lack of funding has made conditions worse than usual is left out of the story and even then they are better than anyone on the Left will admit. Many kids are brought here by people who are not their family, as their entry ticket, but would such a report bother to check that out? As for the usual slam against Trump, he's not out for himself, he's doing what he thinks best for the country, and money is his area of expertise after all; though of course I understand the Left has to turn it into something evil as they always do. It should be possible to disagree with his decisions without pretending he has the evil motives you all impute to him. Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

The people of Hong Kong? They've been experiencing western style freedom for a long time, why would they be on the Left?
