Let me help you put it in context. In Minnesota, where I'm from, 50,000 of the state's 5 million people participated in the primary (actually I think it was a caucus, I'm not sure). In 2008, Minnesota gave 1.2 million votes to McCain, which means that something on the order of about 5% of Minnesota's Republicans bothered to participate in the primary. It doesn't actually count for anything because it doesn't allocate any delegates.So you're looking at an election whose sole participants were the Republican party's most motivated voters. Everybody else stayed home because it was a completely meaningless exercise. Is it as surprising, now, that the most motivated voters turn out to be the ones who have the most extreme ideology? Sure, but in America, comparing the state of our politics to that of other nations (as in Europe, etc) is something only Democrats do. Republicans, in general, think you European types are all Draculas or some shit, I don't even know.

You are mostly seeing the extreme views. The crazies are more outspoken than the rest of the population. That is probably correct. No, it is mostly racism.There's nothing in Obama's positions that is a problem for most Americans. However, those who are racist have to paint Obama as being some sort of extremist. They can't just complain that he is black, because such overt racism is not acceptable today. So their egos demand that they distinguish themselves from Obama in other ways. Accusing him of being a left extremist seems to be what they have settled on. But, as a result, they find themselves forced to support insanely rightist positions to contrast themselves with Obama.For myself, I am enjoying it as entertainment. It does look as if the Republican party might self-destruct over this.

Then again I was 18 then so little did I know or could tell by the way people behaved or spoke. Theres a lot I only understood later.Anyway, the more Ive learnt the more I "hate" the way neo-cons have taken the country I fell almost in love with hostage.
