Re: guns versus mentality
All I can say is that as a visitor to the US, seeing guns on sale in Walmart felt like I was visiting a truly schizophrenic and dangerous country.
(and this was compounded on a later visit, when a road road incident was heightened by the fact that the rager was in a pickup with 2 rifles strapped to the rear of the cab. I can't explain to you how insane that felt.)
I find that folks from the UK have a skewed idea of American gun culture. I remember having a nice conversation with a man who was going on holiday in the US & was telling us yanks about his intent to walk around with his gun on his hip while on vacation. How disappointed he was to find out we didn't do that here. Too many western movies, I guess. Folks in my part of California love their guns, but I'm hardly ever aware that it's dangerous or schizophrenic around here.
OTOH, when traveling in Belize a few years ago, I was startled when armed men in army camo gear continually patrolled the Mayan pyramids we visited. For our own protection, of course. Then there were the guards w/ patrol dogs who guarded the beach at night near our bungalows. Scared the crap out of me one night when I snuck out for a ciggie.
Guns are too enmeshed in our culture here, but I still don't worry about a random shooting happening to me or mine. Maybe I'm just apathetic, as well.

Re: Solution to Problem
I still think a teacher or two from each school should have a gun. Certainly the Principal who died trying to stop the Connecticut shooter would have been well served to have one. And shopkeepers in malls and someone in every business and every home. \
\
BUT schools could at least hire security guards. That's not too outlandish an idea, no need to deprive the millions of law-abiding citizens of their guns, just a little common sense here.
Arming individuals in these circumstances is a bad idea, IMHO. This particular massacre happened so fast - how quickly could someone get to a locked up gun & confront this kid who was obviously hellbent to take out as many victims as possible? As quickly as the first responders were there, who's to say someone armed to protect wouldn't be mistaken for a threat? The initial reports in this case mentioned 2 shooters.

I just don't buy the idea that more armed (civilian) people = more safety in public places. It's easy to Monday-morning-quarterback and say the principal or the other adults would've stopped this kid if only they'd had guns, on that particular day, within reach to grab when surprised with violence at work. Whew, that's a lot of connecting dots.

all the kids had better have an object thick enough to stop bullets between them and everyone with a gun, because a stray round or a ricochet is enough to kill.
Like bullet-proof backpacks?

Re: These Yanks are Crazy.....
Nobody seems to care what the founders had to say about the necessity of the Second Amendment because of the real threat of government and other forms of tyranny against the people, but THAT's the bottom line for me.
Rounding up people & putting them into government-run camps, do you consider that tyranny Faith?

I'm still curious if you think tyranny is forcing people into government-run camps.

Re: These Yanks are Crazy.....
No, I asked you twice if you consider that tyranny. Duh.
So you would support armed resistance in the case of the government rounding up folks & placing them in detention centers, yes?

Re: These Yanks are Crazy.....
I MIGHT, I MIGHT NOT. I HAVE NOT CONSIDERED THE SITUATION. I stated the Second Amendment principle, I support the principle, there's a reason we have the Second Amendment, to give us security against ALL KINDS OF TYRANNIES AND PREDATIONS, including CRIME, house invasion, government roundjups, gthe works. Some situations are obviously going to be beyond small arms resistance. Good grief, stop pushing the envelope here.
No reason to shout, I'm following your logic in support of the 2nd amendment, not pushing any envelope in the least.
Since you say you've not considered the situation, may I ask that you consider what your reaction would be, based on your appreciation of the 2nd amendment, if a group of Americans were forced from their homes & placed in government supported camps? Would you encourage them to resist with guns, would you provide them weapons?

Re: growth of suspicious detention camps...
Private companies are just fine in the US; GM & the stockholders are coming along, despite the foolishness of the bond holders who knew exactly what they were getting into ( I know, I service their accounts); the stock market is chugging along as usual; and congress is doing what the corporations are paying them to do - along with a little help from the voting public.
The money being paid to 'the filthy rich' is being funneled into congressional campaigns, true, but I hardly consider that actual tyranny. I don't think Sheldon Adelson & crew are very happy with the electoral outcome, based on their money spent.

Background checks
I wish the result were some kind of surprise. But only the fact that a vote was even taken should surprise us.
Next time, Gadget. Next time...
Yes, this will come up again and soon. If it passes the Senate, it will never get anywhere in the House. Boehner won't even bring it to the floor, and it becomes the rallying cry in 2014 to put the Dems & Pelosi back in charge so the House has a chance to vote on the bill.
It may hit Obama's desk sometime in 2015.
