I'm not particularly enamored with guns. I don't even like to play shoot 'em up video games. But I can relate to people who like to do target shooting. When I was on active duty, I was required to maintain a qualification with a firearm despite the fact that I never actually carried one and was never assigned one. I always found the practice needed, which was just a couple of sessions before each qualification test, challenging and reasonably enjoyable. For me the issue was overcoming my physical reaction to the noise and recoil reasonably well enough to achieve a high score. I think the fact that I shot relatively infrequently added to the challenge.I never picked up a firearm any other time, but I really don't find it hard to imagine people doing target shooting for fun, and of course lots of people do that and never have loaded guns or ammo at home. You mean the constitutionally described militia of the Several States that is discussed in the Article 2? The one that the president is the command-in-chief of? Or are you talking about the fantasy militia gun nuts think we ought to have just in case the federal army attempts to march down one of the various Jefferson Davis Highways.

The argument appears ridiculous because you are not channeling the spirit of a gun advocate. Gun advocates will tell you that the police will arrive well past time to shoot so you need to be the one hanging out in Starbucks or the bar, or the DMV with your BFG at the ready.

That surely must be the case. That teen pregnancy Map Dr. Adequate posted suggests that states with lots of guns also tend to have lots of teen moms.

You seem to have forgotten that the question we are discussing is not disarmament, but rather the reason gun manufacturer's advertising those super killing power bullets are a great idea.Are you saying that you need more killing power to be able to fight the police and the EPA. If that's correct I'd appreciate you letting me know.

No it isn't complicated. Just irrational. The evidence suggests that it does not work. People do shoot boyfriends on occasion, and they also shoot their own nieces hiding in closets. But it turns out that a few irrational shootings doesn't generate the fear that keeps teenagers from getting pregnant.

Of course the poll asked the question of what "might" happen which makes the poll a little bit loopy. But not so loopy that it does not show a fairly dramatic difference between Republicans and everyone else.
