If I had a gun in the house, I'd probably be dead right now.
... in the absence of guns suicidal people will still commit suicide.

Years ago I had an internet discussion with an American about guns. He had visited Vancouver and he said he was glad he was carrying a gun. I pointed out to him that millions of Canadians walk those same streets every day completely unarmed.
So the question is whether you think Jesus advocated facing real threats completely unarmed, including facing threats against your family?

The easy way tends to work well in movies and TV shows - which is where most Americans get their ideas about guns.
When he got to the pump action he told the scouts that the easiest way to talk a suspect into surrendering during a standoff is to work the action within their hearing.

You're almost always safer without a gun than with one. A gun is not a defensive weapon.
There are places where having a gun is more of a liability than it is a defense, and others where it offers more of a defense than it does a liability.

That's the kind of Constitution-worship that makes non-Americans a bit queasy.
As much as I want to get rid of guns, I am not for having the government ignore the constitution in their zeal to make this a better place....

No. A government that blindly follows a stupid law makes me more upset.
But surely a government as powerful as the US government that disregards the law with respect to even its own citizens ought to make you feel even more upset.

That's what I'm doing. The Second Amendment clearly does not apply to people who are not members of "a well-regulated militia", yet your government stupidly follows the misinterpretation of the law.
Fault the society that has the tools but refuses to use them.

It isn't the constitution that restrains the government from wielding unlimited power. Constitutions are suspended every day.
But for more temperate people, it's simply the highest law of the land that restrains a government from wielding unlimited power.

(I hope you recognize that "every day" or "this year" in this context is a figure of speech - and I'll be glad to explain to you what a figure of speech is, if necessary.) Let's look at some examples of constitutions that have been suspended so far this year... Wikipedia knows everything. Here's a list of political leaders who suspended the constitution.

My point is what I said:
It turns out that suspensions of constitutions are not very common, and that examples of such suspensions being a good idea are even rarer. Most of them are done by dictators and have little to recommend them as examples. What's your point?quote:

If I said, "Constitutions CAN BE SUSPENDED," would that pass muster?
Figure of speech or not, ringo's statement was an exaggeration of just how common it is to suspend the constitution.

No. The real question is whether or not there is any way to reverse a stupid Supreme Court ruling. Isn't the real question whether or not we should suspend the constitution? I suspect not. I suspect that calling for gun control today is like calling, "Man the pumps!" on the Titanic today.

I'm glad you asked. It means that it isn't the constitution that restrains the government from wielding unlimited power. ringo writes:
What does that even mean? It isn't the constitution that restrains the government from wielding unlimited power. Your next question is, "Then what does?" It depends. For example, why did Hitler get away with seizing unlimited power in Germany? Because hardly anybody objected; they wanted him to have power. It isn't the constitution that restrains the government; it's the will of the people.

But clearly there are options. For a right that "shall not be infringed", there's a lot of infringement going on. Every restriction on gun-keeping and gun-bearing is an infringement. The court, split 5-4, came down on one side. The Rule of Law requires this government to act in accordance with that interpretation. Not optional. It isn't a question of whether or not you can "suspend the Constitution". It's a question of how high.

I'm not sure what you are getting at with your analogy.
