Re: Au contraire, mon ami
Drive your car recklessly, and you will accumulate a record that drives your insurance rates to stratospheric levels. Many a foot has eased off their pedals after their owners' insurance rates went sky high.
But that's not car insurance; that's the fear of car insurance.
Quite a different thing.
If we had to line up all the men, women and children killed by guns every year as we sustain our Wild West gun culture, and had to shoot them in the head en masse in public ceremony, gun control laws would pass tomorrow.
Of course; the fear of guns will do just that: get you knee-jerk, freedom-quenching legislation passed in the blink of an eye.

Love your enemies!

Re: Responsible Gun Owner News
Folks are right to be leery.
quote:
"‘Smart’ Firearm Draws Wrath of the Gun Lobby" from The New York Times:
Second Amendment defenders argue that once guns with high-tech safety features go on sale, government mandates will follow. They cite a decade-old New Jersey law requiring that within three years of the recognition technology’s becoming available in the United States, all guns sold in the state would have to be smart.
quote:
"‘Smart’ Firearm Draws Wrath of the Gun Lobby" from The New York Times:
The National Rifle Association, in an article published on the blog of its political arm, wrote that smart guns, a term it mocks as a misnomer, have the potential to mesh with the anti-gunner’s agenda, opening the door to a ban on all guns that do not possess the government-required technology.
Call them 'gun nutters' if you'd like, but the concerns are genuine and valid. Don't let the (entirely inappropriate) comments of the few cloud your perception of the majority of gun-rights individuals.
There is good reason to be wary of guns that can be armed and disarmed via a radio-controlled computer chip.

Re: Balance Shifts about Gun Control
Now what? With murderous convicts bursting into the bedroom would I reconsider my earlier conclusions that a gun in the house is a danger always?
I doubt it. The mathematics is undeniable
Really?
These brutes are seconds away from beating you to death and doing God-knows-what to your wife and kids, and you'd be reassuring yourself with math?
I find that impossible to believe.

Re: Balance Shifts about Gun Control
You missed the point.
I was calling Percy out on his silliness.
I don't own any guns and have no desire to. But I will admit that, if I were ever in a situation like the hypothetical one Percy described, I'd be real desperate to get my hands on one. All the reasons I decided against getting a gun in the first place wouldn't matter and would be of no comfort while intruders beat me to death in my own bed.

Re: Slovene Home Guard
The number of governments that have been abusive to their people is far greater than the number of governments that have been benevolent.
As a simple matter of statistics it is nave to presume any government an exception to this trend.

Re: Slovene Home Guard
As a matter of statistics, it's naive to presume that any person will remain alive.
The main difference between your statement and mine is that I'm aware how ridiculous mine is.
The main difference is tense; but I have fixed that for you now, so you can see how my comment actually applies to the real world instead of to your silly fantasy world where it's somehow impossible for governments to ever become bad.

Re: Another one bites the dust.
Because never let it be thought that there could be any collective responsibility for these tragedies - it's all the fault of other people.
Isn't it collective responsibility that tries putting fault on 'other people'?
Prosecuting the negligent mother puts fault directly where the fault belongs.

Re: Another one bites the dust.
You're ignoring the dynamic which is sad.
And you're inventing a bogeyman; which is even sadder.
Sure, you can point the finger at "negligent" parents, but only if you yourself are utterly perfect, and never make any mistakes.
Do we arrest the brewmaster for your drunk driving?
As a result, innocent lives have to be sacrificed
Only in your fantasy.
Everyone who loves their guns, should be saying to themselves every morning: "Today, (and ignoring every other avoidable death) two children will die in gun accidents. To their parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, family and friends I say: your sacrifice is worth it, because it preserves my right to my guns."
What a nave load of crap.
You might as well apologize to all the children who get beaten to preserve your right to wear a belt around your pants; or to all the people who will die in car accidents to preserve your right to drive; to everyone clinging to life or worse from a bad case of alcohol poisoning to preserve your right to throw one back at the end of the day; and on and on it goes...
Your logic is just ridiculous.
But that's your problem.

Re: Another one bites the dust.
What you will never hear, because our news agencies (and yours) tend to shy away from good news, is the number of crimes that are prevented by gun owners.
Perhaps you can provide some reference to these numbers?

Re: Another one bites the dust.
Your arguments are so silly they don't even deserve the attention required to address them. Not to mention that we've had so many of these threads and we've gone over these same things you're bringing up so many times already.
I believe it was ringo who compared guns to foreskins: you don't miss them if you've never had them.
Likewise, just because you've lost yours doesn't mean everyone needs circumcising.
You cannot even comprehend living in a society where people value gun ownership; and this limited perspective is evident in your simplified caricaturization of the issue.

Love your enemies!

Read the three or four other threads on this exact same topic if you want to see my argument.

Re: Another one bites the dust.
So when I post, saying "It's a passion which can't face questioning its cost", you reply "Your arguments are so silly they don't even deserve the attention required to address them."
You mean when you post utter nonsense?
Of course.
See the list of previous threads I presented in Message 3440 if you want to see where the costs have already been debated. Then, if you have something new to add, we can address those additional points.
But if you expect anyone to put time into addressing your emotionally-charged knee jerking, you're delusional.
